soapboxing too long for bluesky
this was originally gonna be a skeet thread but it got too long
so my question got answered at the FA townhall and thus i wanna talk about it
people who were following me on bsky in the latter half of last year know that i was a big and rather angry advocate for FA recruiting a communications officer
here is the answer to my question about that:
https://youtu.be/zfynMkqDJGw?si=ZPH.....Ti9&t=3775
obviously the most satisfying answer for me would've been "yes, we're working on it" but i knew that was never gonna be the answer :P. this answer boils down to: "we've thought about it before but haven't ever committed to anything - also it'd be too expensive"
sciggs didn't actually *say* the too expensive part but cmon, its FA, i knew it would always be too expensive from the moment i first suggested it. but its the "been looked into before" part that i think is worth discussing.
potentially radically, i think any decision made before the 2024 staff exodus needs to be disregarded as long as it isn't a line of code written into the website. neer ran the site like, apologies, a madman, trying to do too much himself. he's dead. the site no longer needs to be run like a madman
and then a couple months after neer died, the MAJORITY of the core staff left the site in a hissy fit that, as far as i can tell, at it's core was about somebody (sciggles) coming in and saying the way you guys have been running things is fucked up.
so can we trust any decisions made by a stubborn leader and a team who repeatedly investigated themselves and found that they'd done nothing wrong? cmon.
now, i got the vibe from sciggles' tone in this answer that the communications officer suggestion HAS been considered since the 2024 exodus but has been deemed not necessary enough to carve out the budget for. i agree. communications have been a LOT better...
...for now.
the second shit hits the fan again? we'll just have to see. i think there *will* come disagreements about how the site is run considering FA is an american based and hosted company and the track record of trump administrations so far, and whether those disagreements end up with an angry mod leaping into discord and accidently declaring that life begins at conception (if you weren't there for the 2024 2.7 discourse don't even ask) will be the real test of if new-FA needs a communications officer.
obviously, prevention is better than cure, but yeah i don't see a world where sciggles deems that worth it. which i do percieve as a character flaw, but what can you do - i formed very strong opinions on her during the 2024 2.7 fiasco that haven't all been eroded yet (:
tldr: do i still think hiring a communications officer is the best idea? yes. do i think that's going to happen? no.
