RIP Dragoneer
I know I haven't made a journal in forever, since I rarely have a lot to say or announce, and I'm late on this because of spending half the day asleep and computer troubles and work. But I still wanted to at least get my feelings or thoughts about the tragic news out there, too. By now I'm sure most are already aware that Dragoneer has died, and it's shocking for a lot of us who weren't aware of what he was going through or dealing with. What little research I've seen has revealed a lot and it honestly hurts to see how wronged he was by the very health care system that's meant to help. To be as sick as he was for over a month and be denied help and billed out the ass for what little they're offering to do, and ultimately being told "well since you won't pay us, you can fend for yourself" while dealing with a serious deadly sickness is just difficult to put into words really. Because words don't do enough justice for how inhumane and cruel that is to do to anybody. And realizing that he isn't the first, and won't be the last, who has to suffer because of this shit is even worse to think about.
While I never had personal experience talking to him and only occasionally came across his art, I still feel it is important to pay respect to him for all he did. I may have just been nothing but another face in the crowd or random user on his website, but without his work building FA over the years, I definitely wouldn't be where I am now in the fandom. I've been on this site for nearly 16 years now which is almost half my life, which feels insane to imagine. I've made so many friends, met so many cool artists, and been able to share stories I worked on or art I've commissioned on here. None of it would've been possible without Dragoneer and FA. Even if I can never personally tell him it now, I do wish to thank him for all he did for us. No matter how much people may not like some aspects of it or what changes have happened, we owe a lot of gratitude that he kept it alive for all of us.
In closing, I do hope he's able to rest easier now. Free of all the pain he's dealt with the past month or two while he was sick, all the stress and worry about trying to support the website, and the stress of just trying to survive in this cruel and terrible world. It's not the end any of us would've wanted; whether for him, for us, for anyone. I feel for his friends and family who now have to deal with this loss that honestly should've never happened, and hope they can find peace, too. Hopefully FA can survive and his legacy will live on, I can't imagine he'd ever want the site to die with him but we'll have to see what happens. I don't expect anyone will be looking for me if things do go away, but you can always track me down on various sites and places like Twitter, Discord, Telegram, and YouTube.
For now, good bye and rest easy, Dragoneer. We'll all miss you. Hopefully we'll all be able to properly thank you in the afterlife when we join you.
