UFFL 2023 week 5 results and Week 6 preview!
Marty here! Sorry for the wait! but here the results of week 5!
Easton at California
Hey kids! Repeat after me! T! R! A! P! What does that spell? TRAP! Easton rolled into this week with the best record in the UFFL, with a matchup against the winless Demons. So of course, the most logical thing in the world happens: California completely dominates on the ground, running the ball 47 times with two different backs topping 100 yards rushing. The Bald Eagles completely imploded with nine penalties on defense, part of an absolutely atrocious 17 team penalties, and only managed to score a touchdown off of an interception in California’s red zone. Easton still has the best record in the United conference, but they need to get things together quick, as the hard part of their schedule is coming up soon.
Final score: CAL 30, EAS 10
Nashville at Chicago
The tale (tail?) of this game was defense. Neither quarterback had all that much time to throw throughout the game, with a combined eight sacks and 10 hurries. It was a very low scoring affair in the first half, with the only touchdown for either team coming when Darius Smith threw a pick-six to cornerback Isaac Hunt (his ninth career defensive touchdown, the most among active players) . However, the relentless press of Le Pickup finally wore down the Tuts defenders, as Jean-Etienne Tremblay would score rushing touchdowns on consecutive possessions to give Chicago the lead in the third quarter. It was still a one-score game, however, and Nashville had a chance to tie the game late. A sack would leave them at 4th and 16, and Roman Oliviera’s final pass was broken up to seal the game for the Outlaws.
Final score: CHI 20, NSH 13
New York at Las Vegas
This one started looking a lot like the Nashville/Chicago game. A low-scoring, defensive struggle, punctuated by plenty of refball. The yellow flags were flying fast and furious in this game, with four penalties in the first three minutes and 14 accepted penalties overall. At first it looked like the game was going to be all New York. The Defiant scored 10 unanswered points to open the game, and running back Alex Smith was gouging the Bandits D for 6 yards a carry. Justice Matari’s second touchdown catch of the day would put New York up 17-3 halfway through the third quarter. However, that’s about when Sylvester Stapler put the team on his back. Las Vegas was in hurry-up mode the entire fourth quarter, with Stapler attempting 24 passes in that quarter alone. The Bandits started to slowly chip away at New York’s lead. After scoring to make it a two-point game, Vegas would force a three-and-out to get the ball back with 2:21 left to play. Stapler then organized a 16-play drive that included three successful fourth down conversions, allowing rookie kicker Claire Sasakibara to chip in her first career game-winning field goal.
Final score: LVB 18, NYD 17
New Orleans at Montreal
Last week, the Royal were missing all three of their best offensive players. While Ligustica remains on the sidelines, both Keonte Hughes and Tyron Appleby are back on the field today, and they’re pissed off about the Easton game. The playcalling was conservative for Appleby’s first game back, only dialing up 17 total passing plays. However, that was enough for him to net three passing touchdowns, including a long bomb to Hughes that the speedy wideout took 95 yards to the house, a team record (and personal bests for both players). Flip Penguinator and Leone Lopez kept the Corsairs in the game, and they were a failed two-point conversion away from tying the game in the fourth quarter. But Appleby was not to be denied, and he beat an all-out blitz on 3rd and 5 to connect with rookie Robert Loera, who went 70 yards untouched to put the game away.
Final score: MTL 38, NOC 26
Austin at Grand Rapids
On paper, this game was one of the most anticipated games of the week, a matchup of 3-1 teams with first place in the Continental West at stake. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a bit of a dud, especially at the beginning. There was only one touchdown in the first half, and Austin was dominating time of possession with their run game. The Dragons received the second-half kickoff, but fumbled the ball on their second play, and were down by three scores by the end of the quarter. Things started to look up for Grand Rapids in the fourth quarter, when they finally scored their first TD of the game and then immediately recovered a fumble themselves to set up a second touchdown in less than four minutes. The comeback was on…and then it was off again, as Bobby Burnette would leave the game after being injured on a sack. With Morton Ritter under center, they weren’t able to get another first down until there was only 30 seconds remaining in the game, and the final Hail Mary attempt would fall incomplete.
Final score: ATX 26, GRD 20
Richmond at Baltimore
Are the Ponies…good? Through four weeks they’ve already tied last season’s total in wins, and they come into today’s game with a good chance to start the season 3-2. Of course, there’s the slight problem of losing their starting QB. Jillian St. Claire is going to miss several weeks with a high ankle sprain, and backup Christian Wright hasn’t started a game since 2018. Fortunately, they’re up against the Flames today. Now, Richmond has actually been a lot better than their record indicates, and their run game has kept them in pretty much every game so far. But they have little room for error, and were undone today by a fatal case of butterfingers. Richmond coughed up the ball three times, and even though only one of them was a turnover they were all drive-stoppers. Wright also proved himself up to the task, going 22 for 26 with a career-high four touchdown passes (more than he’s had in any full season before).
Final score: BAL 38, RIC 20
Colorado at Downriver
Lillian Newman can’t be stopped! A week after torching the Flames with three touchdowns, she followed it up with 290 passing yards and another 3 touchdowns against the Crushers, with no picks or sacks. She would even add 57 yards on the ground to boot, with her first career rushing score. That rush would give the Waves the lead late in the third quarter, a lead that they wouldn’t relinquish. Colorado would get within three, thanks to Aspen Redfield’s three touchdowns of his own, but too many penalties would hamper their ability to come back. A beautiful spiral pass to Renato Hanna from midfield would ice the game for Downriver.
Final score: DWN 31, COL 21
Miami at North Florida
It’s the battle of the Sunshine State, as the Tropics travel up to the Panhandle to do battle with the Renegades. Unfortunately, Miami brought a knife to this gunfight. Caryn Becker might have only completed nine passes all game, but a full third of them went for touchdowns. Miami, on the other hand, couldn’t seem to get anything going for long, going a putrid 2 for 15 on third down and throwing two interceptions. They were down by three scores going into the half, and it was 28-3 by the end of the third quarter. Despite pulling most of their starters for the final frame, North Florida continued to run the score up. Veteran running back Tyler Wirl only got two carries all game, but you wouldn’t be able to tell that just looking at the stat line. He made both touches count, taking both in for long touchdowns and an amazing 92 yard rushing day.
Final score: NFR 42, MIA 13
Players of the Week:
Offense: Lillian Newman (QB – DWN): 29/33 for 290 passing yards and 3 TDs, plus eight carries for 57 yards and a rushing TD
Defense: Kennith Shrader (DE – ATX): 5 tackles, three sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery
Special Teams: Claire Sasakibara (K – LVB): three field goals (43, 39, 19) and an extra point
