I just looked it up and found a number of journals like this one https://www.furaffinity.net/journal/9435265/ saying that FA has had a problem displaying custom thumbnails for a while and apparently thumbnails only work for things like stories and audio but not artwork itself for some reason, a very unfortunate problem for users who want to artwork that warrants a warning. :\
