Hm, if separate thumbnails won't work maybe a brief content warning can be put in each pic's title; that won't be as good as a warning thumbnail of course but it can be the next best thing to catch a viewer's eye who gets the pic in their inbox or while browsing the site to better notify them of the explicit disturbing content. ;)
