Still Alive, And Things Are Looking Better.

So, it’s been a while since I last posted something to this page.
Since August of 2024, I’ve been in danger of becoming homeless. It was due to a co-worker that I was able to stay off the street for a while, until January of 2025. That’s when the co-worker told me I had to move out of his apartment -- due to him having family coming to live with him -- and, around the same time I discovered I had what appeared to be a nasty infection in my foot.
So, I put practically everything I owned into storage, and moved out of his apartment before admitting myself to the local VA Hospital. It was quickly diagnosed that, YES, I did have a deep tissue infection that went all the way down to the bone. So, I had surgery to remove the infected tissue -- which took one and a half toes in the process -- and endured six weeks of antibiotics to kill any lingering traces of the infection.
During this time, I lost my job of 20+ years, and had to get help from the Social Workers employed by the VA. It was a long, and somewhat fruitless process, until someone told me about a facility called the Domiciliary: something like a recovery/therapy shelter for homeless vets and such who also struggled with addiction. I managed to get accepted, and for a while I had a roof over my head, a bed to sleep in, three meals a day, all while doing my best to go through their recovery programs (They did more for anger management, personal recovery, and learning new skills to break the cycle of addiction and being destitute).
Ultimately, while I couldn’t find a new job, I did get help in applying for SSI and SNAP, as well as getting HUD/VASH (it’s like Section 8 voucher for Veterans), and help in locating a suitable place to live in.
The end result was, while I am still waiting on SSI, I did get SNAP benefits, as well as help finding a new apartment -- as of the time of his posting -- that I am waiting for the Housing Authority to inspect the unit so I can move in ASAP.
Thinks are looking up finally, after nearly a year of feeling helpless and hopelessness after losing both my former home and job.
Will keep you all posted on progress as it comes!
