Ukiyo-e
Anyone like ukiyo-e art?
If so, have you any favorite pieces or artists? Why?
It'd be cool if I got a discussion going about iy.
I like Hokusai's crazy wiggly lines and anatomy, and Hiroshige's compositions and colors.
PS Computer still broken, still have plans for new MacBook pro but will hopefully be borrowing a laptop from a friend. One member of my family said, "Just go to the library and use their computers!" -____- I don't need to just check my email ughh.

I saw a modern Woodblock Print showcase at my school in one of the galleries. It was pretty intense. I would love to try and do a multicolored woodblock print someday.
Several image examples within as well as what exactly it is :3
Leighnx: Wow, I knew he was a fan, but I'd no idea he replicated it. Pretty interesting stuff, definitely not part of Van Gogh's reputation.
What I meant by appear in his work was Van Gogh had something of Hiroshige's on his wall, and it showed up in a self-portrait of his, Self Portrait With Bandaged Ear.

I'm sure there are more examples, but I can't find them :)

He's a part of the more modern shin-hanga school, influenced by the western Art Nouveau movement, so he's not technically an ukiyo-e artist, but still a direct descendant of that tradition, certainly. You look at his stuff and the detail and color and compositions are super striking, then you realize they're all wood block prints and it completely blows your mind <3
Yoshida Hiroshi is a rad dude.

I actually like things like gesaku (戯作) a little more, where they have stories written out in calligraphy around pictures. That and political pics. There's a really great one of a sumo throwing a Western soldier down while others stand and cower at his might. That's obviously the "Honor the Emperor, Expel the Barbarian" sentiment, and it's a little funny.

His work for The Narrow Road to Oku (the Donald Kneene translation) is breathtaking :D
