Bruised ego
Recently joined up to a furry muscle forum, turns out when it comes to favourite furry muscle artists, I generally don't make anyone's list.
So here's the deal, since I'm already feeling like shit, just give it to me straight.
That's right, JUST GIVE IT TO ME STRAIGHT, PEOPLE. I'm sure most of you know what I mean by that.

FA+

No, really.
Pfft!
Also, when I think of your art, I don't think "Muscle fur", I think "fucking hot". Your proportions are much more natural and lack the hyper-build style i usually associate with "Muscle Art". Your drawings are muscular, but the muscles aren't the focus, they're just part of the overall hotness, if that makes any sense.
Well, the second half, anyway. But seriously.
Take beachfox's second paragraph and you have what I would have said, but in better words. >.< :P
FA-wise, it's a fact of life that people who keep stuff showin' up on the front page or in others' faves are going to get more attention. So while we all wouldn't mind more bajr art... well, hey there, you did toss up some new stuff and you've already got more than 100 faves on it! Was just gonna say, as stuff sinks to the 30th page of people's favorites, it's harder for the new kids to stumble on it (unless they happen to catch it by a keyword search, I guess!).
And having embarked on this "fave everything I like" project, I'm noticing that a lot of stuff I like - and that plenty of others like, if fchan demand is any indicator - doesn't catch nearly as many faves as I'd expect (especially compared to the power of the Teen Girl Squad on the latest sparkly-vampire-as-a-fox doodle!). I think part of it is that people feel awkward about faving the entirety of an artist's catalog - having done that recently, it's a lot of clicking! - and part is that a lot of people are looking and just haven't gotten into the whole watchstalk-and-fave thing. But dude, you've got like two thousand fans watching - that's a lot of deck chairs, you're doing fine!
The "furry muscle" community is a niche. A niche that thrives on subject over skill. It doesn't matter if someone draws like a six-year-old with a degenerative nerve disorder, they will fap to oversized muscles, even if half of them aren't even in the right places.
If your ego thrives on the praise of a bunch of horny nitwits who can't tell good artwork from derivative crap, then I'd say you were due for a change of scenery, to be quite honest. I know I don't show up on any of those "favorite artist" lists over there, and I know for a fact that I am not on ANYONE'S "favorite artist" lists on their profiles over here. But I move on. I keep drawing. I have bigger things to concern myself with than what people here think of me.
Do what you want to do. Your audience will come. But really, don't try to impress people here, because they see and think with their penises and not their eyes and brains. Draw what makes you happy, and you'll be happier for it.
So that's me giving it to you straight.
as for them...fuck em.
-M.
However, like what was said above, a lack of creating artwork puts a hamper on people's opinions.
Also, I feel that you're stuff is lower on the "Furry Buff-o-meter" The guys you draw are very realistic in size, and there's nothing wrong with that. But being so realistic (yaknow, for animals walking upright and wearing clothes) the art is almost to the point where I would consider them more "General Adult" than "Muscle-Adult"
Then again I also imagined that you traded in your feelings for the ability to melt steel with your disapproving glare, so I guess it just goes to show that you never can tell!
I have received several PMs (or maybe I SHOULD say "PMS"s) from people, berating my commentary. ONLY a one-line comment over those on here who commented more than I did, and I think every one of your comments are VALID and YOUR OWN BELIEFS. It's important that you express what you believe. Pissy Badger was looking for uplifting comments and honest critiques.
Pissy Badger is a wonderful artist. For him to get upset about this shows one thing: Jealousy in the furry fandom is rampant. I don't know WHAT happened in the forum (I don't even KNOW WHAT FORUM IT IS, nor do I care), but ganging up on one artist is definitely nasty in my book.
SO this next comment is directed to those people who feel the need to slam someone else just to build themselves up. There is ROOM for all different kinds of art in the Furry Fandom. Just because YOU don't like it doesn't mean YOU need to denigrate another artist. If you can't PLAY NICE and agree to disagree at times, then you should most definitely KEEP YOUR COMMENTS TO YOURSELVES.
Thank you for your words *big hugs*
MuscleWolf and I never made anyone's list, either. Tell PB that all it is is a matter of taste. There are so many good artists out there, in so many different styles. Clean, Erotic, Porn, MPron (mega porn - YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST! USE IT! NO CHARGE!!!), there's enough to go around for anyone. Don't forget Written Art, Music, 3 dimensional, 3D graphics, Theater pieces, and Podcasts, too.
Of course I'm going to get criticized again here because I think the best art done in the fandom is done by women. From a Professor's viewpoint.
Actually, you did ;)
That said, as a few people mentioned above, one of the best ways to build popularity and notoriety (aside from skillz) is to produce and post are as frequently or as regularly as possible. I know it gets rough sometimes to try to keep up with that, but, short attention spans are short, and it's easy to slip from people's minds.
I personally don't follow many "furry muscle" groups. Don't get me wrong -- I have plenty of friends and chat to a lot of people in them ... but my own personal range of what interests me seems actually rather narrow, so I just watch or follow the particular artists I like. ^.^
Meh. I like the way you draw muscles, so hopefully that is saying something.
So, in some senses, anthropomorphic characters (at least of some species) can be hypermuscular to some degree, or are expected to become so much bigger than humans can become. Your characters always seem to sport a physique a human could have (if they had those animalistic features). That is if this were one of the most buff humans alive, or at the best possible human potential.
I think this is your preference, to try and make "realistic" buff characters, where I'm saying this is an oxymoron. They are fantastic from the get-go, so you're sort of applying an unnecessary restriction on the dimensions and depiction of some of them.
Minotaurs, (or Tauren if you will), Werewolves, Orcs, even certain Dragons are meant to be hyper powerful and I'm unsure if I've seen too many examples of the hyper size from you that is analogue to (thinking) rippedsaurian as an example.
I just may have a crappy memory and remember the simpler of your works.
Good muscle definition
Fairly realistic muscle placement (on a scale of 1-10, you're a 6.5 on anatomical realism)
Anatomically correct species (usually)
Action pieces (not just pinups)
Variety of species
Cons:
Very little art
Slow art production
Unpopular species (Arguable if you should change this. I say no)
Hypertrophic genitals (Turnoff for all but the hardcore fetishist crowd)
Excessively muscles (not realistic for 'normal' muscles)
Not excessive enough (Does not appeal to hypertrophic fans, which are very very vocal. They like guiness-level muscles and up)
Additional tips/ideas for expanding popularity:
Pick a target audience and focus on it. Find out what they like and concentrate on it. (Good start here!)
Draw either only popular species, especially Rule 34 (Renamon, Krystal, Pokemon, Digimon, Balto, etc.)
Accept comissions for relatively cheap ($25-40 is the 'norm' range people go for, depending on the complexity.)
Offer contests (Kiribans are the most popular and common)
Find an experienced, professional PR and/or Art Manager (Not necessarily me)
Draw a wider range of species. (Some species attract 'woodwork' fans, such as Thylacines and Fossas. I know these two communities well and they are exceptionally close-knit, to the degree that within a week of a new thylacine fursona, two dozen of us are watching them!)
Don't shy from extreme stuff (However you may want to avoid scat, 'fat furs', cubs, or anything particularly disturbing.)
Complex Scenes (Extremely large mural scenes are a LOT of work, but tend to get attention.)
Make Desktops (Upload images specifically sized to be used as desktops. Most popularly, 1024x768, 1280x800, and 1280x960. These three will target 99% of the desktop sizes out there. Sizes larger/smaller but in the same aspect ratio can be resized with little or not image quality degredation.)
Joint Effort (Find an artist you like and do a collaborative work. Combine the best of your talents. This works especially well if they are very popular and/or famous.)
Never piss of your customers
NEVER PISS OFF YOUR CUSTOMERS
I can't stress this one enough. It's entirely too easy to make rants targeting a demographic (cubfurs, zoophiles, etc.) that you are disgusted by. And such a rant may be justified, however it's effects can be an inadvertant and terrible backlash on you, as the demographic more often than not turns out larger than you expected. I can name a lot of artists who ran their business into the ground that way. Especially be wary of ranting about 'animal cocks' and 'zoophiles', as this is almost always taken the wrong way, and opens up disaster. You may not wish to deal with such customers, but you should handle it on a case by case basis and avoid public denouncement- Many customers you would happily deal with and not offend you may think you're targetting them, even if you are not.
I've had some experience managing PR and selling art, CDs, and comissions. I am not a (good) artist myself, though Ferox tells me I color wonderfully. I'm just an idea guy.
I'd be happy to offer free advice. Just note, or IM me anytime with questions.
Don't worry about it. Musclefurs tend to like musclefur artists. It's a particular style... sometimes overexaggerated, sometimes just regular exaggerated...
But regardless, you're still on my list. So take that.
At the heart of things, that's your problem. You can't expect to blow people away without getting any better. It isn't a problem that you draw infrequently or that you stick to muscular males, but that you simply don't seem to want to improve/change what you know. Take something you drew recently compared to something you did years and years ago, the differences are minimal. I've been watching your art for a LONG time and I do not notice much change either. You decided to go with comfort over challenging yourself and while there is absolutely nothing wrong with that choice, I can assure you it is keeping you from being someone's "favorite". You were a good artist years ago, you're a good artist now, and you'll probably still be good before I can even match your ability. However, if you want to join a brand new group and have your reputation proceed you, then you need to start working on improving your ability.
I personally see nothing wrong with what you are doing and I'm completely content with your abilities as an artist, but we're not talking about what I want. It all depends on what you want.
I think you have to decide why you're drawing. If you're drawing to find yourself on people's top lists and favorites, then yeah I suppose pander to them. But if you're drawing because it brings you pleasure doing something you're damn good at and you just want to share that with other people, then ignore those lists and do what you do. God knows, you do it damn well.
Peace + love to you.
I love your nicer pieces, your style: seems Big&Bold yet soft-on-edges, almost dreamy to me.
I love that you show Big chara's as either: singles in pin-ups, or couples in scenes containing power-play/bondage and/or size deference. ... and wish that you'd more one on one, or even group pic's.
though I still remember that you used to do some gore and/or death stuff too, and that was what had kept me from watching you for a while, though that is just a matter of personal distaste on my part, and has nothing to do with your quality, skill, and/or abilities as an artist, it only has to do my dislike of those destructive fetishes...
though I know that true measure if any artist is: how well that one can; create or recreate something of good detail and form, from something else or from nothing but raw materials; not what that something is. ... and you fit into that measure, from what I have seen, weather I disliked or loved the subject that was being shown in said picture or not.
You draw really great and your stuff has a lot of character. Maybe if you learn to photoshop like a god then people will flock to you faster. But otherwise just keep doing what you've been doing.
I feel a lot like you do about my own art. I'm a long way from being on anyone's top 10 list, but I know I just have to keep persevering.
Nah, screw those lists, dude. You're Pissy Badger. You don't need anyone's approval.
The best thing to do is to put that "EGO thingy" on the side and just have fun doing the artwork.
If you want the fan popularity from the fans, just do one simple thing.
Use your favs, views, or opinions of the fans. If it is a little, you might need to explore and improve the vision of the artwork. If you get a ton, then your on the right track in were your artwork is going.
That is how you try to find your place in the art field. That is how comic book, fantasy, D&D, artist do it.
So don't give up on your work!!! It's Great!! I'm a fan of your work as well.
SO KEEP ON DRAWING!!!!!!!
