According to the #2 in the catholic church, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Catholic sex scandals are not caused by celibacy, but by homosexuality.
He states that "many psychologists and psychiatrists have demonstrated that there is no relation between celibacy and pedophilia." he also says others have shown "that there is a relation between homosexuality and pedophilia."
Bullshit.

Rate of sexual abuse by gender:
1.7 victims per 1,000 female children
0.4 victims per 1,000 male children.
Females are FOUR TIMES more often the victim of an underage sex case.

According to UCDavis ( http://psychology.ucdavis.edu/rainb.....lestation.html ) there is NO EVIDENCE of that. In fact, they say:
Members of disliked minority groups are often stereotyped as representing a danger to the majority's most vulnerable members. For example, Jews in the Middle Ages were accused of murdering Christian babies in ritual sacrifices. Black men in the United States were often lynched after being falsely accused of raping White women.
In a similar fashion, gay people have often been portrayed as a threat to children.

Are homosexual adults in general sexually attracted to children and are preadolescent children at greater risk of molestation from homosexual adults than from heterosexual adults? There is no reason to believe so. The research to date all points to there being no significant relationship between a homosexual lifestyle and child molestation. There appears to be practically no reportage of sexual molestation of girls by lesbian adults, and the adult male who sexually molests young boys is not likely to be homosexual (Groth & Gary, 1982, p. 147).
So Catholic Church? You are officially in my shit list.

So the church is basically preaching to the choir and making an ass of itself at the same time.
But I always did wonder how they got "I want to rape children" from "I like other men."
Seriously, Full grown men =/= Small children.

That's a message that I can get behind. I know that there are plenty of people willing and ready to say that Christianity and religion in general is bullshit and others, usually fundies, saying that any religion but theirs is the true faith. I look to St. James 1:26-27:
"If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless. 27Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world."
Following that idea of not letting myself be polluted by the world, I don't listen to the people in the Church who call me fag or say that I'm the problem with the Church. There are good things that the Church does; but after the the way the Church has propped itself up as having these high moral standards and and pointing and blaming everybody else for the crisis the Church is facing now, they've lost credibility and their moral authority. I never deluded myself, but others did, and I feel bad for them; they were succored.
Just have patience. I know it's frustrating, but there's nothing I can do within my little world but to try and make things better bit by bit. I just take it one day at a time. Don't let the assholes ruin the precious good that does exist.
It is good you have a priest like that, unfortunately with Catholicism, unlike protestant Christian religions (which, are no better at this point, look at the Baptists) the Pope IS supposed to be the direct link to God, and what he says goes. AT least, that is how I always understood it. I just worry about your priest getting defrocked for defying the church edict
