Often times I start stories and never end up finishing them. I get stuck a lot, especially on stories that are based more in the "real world". You have more flexibility when the story is completely fictional. I only just recently learned that myself. I still look forward to seeing anything you do, and shall set about posting more of my "weird" little fictional story tomorrow....(I deleted "Undefeated" like ten seconds ago.)

I've tried mostly "real world" stories, as I figured it's too much work to make up a whole world for example based on magic, but I agree it limits the flexibility. I also think I often try too hard to make things believable.

If (when) I get stuck on this story, I'll try to go back to some of my earlier attempts and see if they can be revived.

Writing is rarely something that can be pulled off satisfactorily, consistently! Keep experimenting until you find what works best for you! And don't feel too terrible if you're just not feeling it some days.

One of the things that I was most productive at was writing short, unrelated chapters. Kinda unrelated. They had an overarching plot, but there was always the flexibility to write a short side-chapter about something completely different if I wanted. Left a lot of room to do whatever I was in the mood for while adding to the story. Got to, like, 500+ pages before I stopped writing on it (which is a shame as it was literally at the very end and just needed a little bit more to finish! terrible!).

Right now I only really seem to get my writing done in sprinting bursts. Long periods of lethargy and brain-muddleness with the occasional 6 hour non-stop writing streak where I pull out 30 pages without leaving my desk (usually only capable of doing that when I stress myself out to the point where I have a little breakdown and go "Screw responsibilities, I'm WRITING >:U!")

So yah your having trouble with writing is entirely consistent with my personal experience with the thing :I

Thanks for the insight! I'll keep on trying. I realize there are so many different aspects of writing that I don't know much about (like how to write good dialogue), but I'll save that for later until I actually have something story-like written down.
