Okay folks, a real quicky here:
As you know, I'm working on writing up a series of journals/essays that cover "How To Survive On The Internet". However, I'm running into some trouble as to what to cover in this series.
So I ask you watchers out there:
What do you think people should know in order to survive on the internet?
Proper chat language?
How to spot people who want nothing more than to harass you?
What to do when something someone said on the internet disturbs you?
How do Terms Of Service affect you and what should you be wary of?
Etc.
I need to narrow down the topics in a way that each entry can contain bullet pointed tips as to what to keep in mind or what to look out for when Surviving on the Internet.
Okay, that's it from me. What have you got watchers?

I have had this experience in the past a few times too many. So this advice might be very helpfull to newbies. =3
Before you ask: Yes! There are people who do something like that, I can tell you from personal experience.
A good tip I can give to 'everyone': "Always act nice".
Really, even if somebody would splatter your whole name over the place, call you a fag or just randomly attack you with harsh comments: Act nice!
'they' are the ones who will look like trolls in return and they will be easyer to ban.
Another tip: "If you get harassed, do not only inquire a ban 'yourself', also ask your 'friends' (through a PM) to file one! Since more replies count greater than just one."
Don't feed the trolls; don't ragequit.
Also, use smileys and punctuation to emote your tone well.
Example:
Yeah that's nice. >:[
Yeah that's nice! :D
Best advice I could think of. Basically take everything you see on the internet with a grain of salt.
Also, Snopes is a viable source to use in debates.
Don't try to act like a smart person if you don't know the subject matter, because someone will come in and call you out on your bullshitting.
DON'T PANIC
Don't forget your towel.
just because we've RP'd in the past, it doesnt give u the right to note me n automatically start an RP without asking if i'm in the mood...
if u don't have anything nice to say in a comment or reply, then don't say it...
Read lots; write little.
Rule 2: Take nothing seriously, even the serious stuff. at the end of the day you can always just turn your PC off.
Rule 3: Refrain from sharing personal information your sensitive about unless it's with a trusted friend, even then be prepared for the potential consequences.
Rule 4: Remember your opinions are only opinions, not hard religiously enforced fact.
Rule 5: Avoid arguments when possible and Dont feed the trolls.
Rule 6: Keep your shit to yourself, if you don't like something don't comment on it, if your offended you looked at it, tough shit. It is not your god given right to voice your opinion on something you have no real positive interest in. You have the right to freedom of speech, you also should have the common seance to realize So does the other person and you do NOT have the right to persecute, flame, troll, bully or slander them.
Rule 7: Nobody relay cares about your two cents, don't be an attention whore. contribute something meaningful or remain Silent when discussing touchy subjects. this includes but is not exclusive to, politics, religions and anything of a sexually taboo nature.
Rule 8: Learn to remain calm, you will come away mostly unscathed, everybody else will look like an ass.
Rule 9: Your wrong sometimes, accept it. When your right, don't gloat over it, victory if enough. When somebody refuses to acknowledge you are right, drop it and morn there ignorance in silence.
Rule 10: Dont Troll or flame, it's good fun at first if your that kinda person but if your only in it for the lulz it marks you as a pretty pathetic person if you require the suffering of others to sooth your own insecurity. You e-penis will never get bigger, so just don't bother.
Also take a second to breath if a comment upsets you. Usually that will be enough to get that first emotional moment out of the way and logic takes control once more. Helps to avoid throwing yourself into a pointless, and most internet arguments are pointless if not all of them, fight.
Though for the real careful types I would say avoid forums, chat rooms, comment sections, etc entirely. The internet can be enjoyed without listening to what anyone else says.
-Lack of coherent reasoning behind their logic.
-Outright disagreeing with you without elaboration.
-Using obviously harsh words and phrases.
-Repeating their statements over and over again.
-Using 'Freedom of Speech' as an argument for their statements.
-Claiming you're just 'sucking up' to mods or others.
-Attempting to put you on the defensive by turning the argument around on you.
-Using the 'You just want the last word' tactic against you.
These are not hard and fast rules, clearly, but they're generally the basic tools of a troll from experience. Though sometimes it can be be hard to tell who is trolling and who is just being their natural douche-bag selves.
if someone is trolling you, take a step back, do NOT put your hands on the keyboard and DO read what they're responding to. if they're laughing at something idiotic like spelling, grammar or just a point of view, just IGNORE them. let them think they got the "last word." if they're saying something that actually makes sense, PAY ATTENTION and don't freak out. remember, it's ONLY THE INTERNET. having the last word doesn't mean you've "won" an argument (this is even applicable in real life) it only makes you look like an argumentative idiot.
99% of drama would be avoidable if that one simple rule is followed.
- With IMs, make sure your status message is accurate, and also be sure to read others' statuses. Someone may be online only in case there's an emergency with a close friend.
- Realize not everyone in the world agrees with you, likes you, or likes what you do. If you don't like it but the other person isn't being an asshole, walk away. There's something more worth your time you could be doing.
