Should I get a backup drive for my PC?

Read It.
My computer says that's its running out of room and all I've got on here is my artwork and some movies. I was thinking of maybe using one of those external drives. You know, one of the ones that holds up to a tetrabyte of info on it?
I need some professional opinions here. My roommate says that they only last about four years before they crap out. Is that true, or has she been listening to nonsense from her computer noob friends and personal experience again? I need a response to this, or as many responses as possible. It always helps to get a second opinion.
So what do you guys think, extra hard drive or no?

For example the one I use only requires one usb connection to both power the hard drive and allow file passage to and fro from it.. while there are others that require a power box that needs to be plugged into the wall socket.. or ones that require two usb cables.. Also shop around on price.. if any of the electronics shops in you area have 'we will beat our compedators prices' deals going on, be sure to make full use of that as well :)
