"Can U help me?" (BIRDS!!!)
I really like birds. I like to learn about new ones. Can you guys help inspire me by showing me birds >>>>>I don't know about?<<<< I know a fair amount about birds, but not nearly as much as some and I would like to discover new species!
Hint: If it was on the Life of Birds, I know about it. If it's a corvid, bird of paradise, or hummingbird, I probably know about it. there is no guarantee.
I will be sketching/painting the ones new to me if you guys suggest them, so toss me THE MOST OBSCURE birds species out there. :>

FA+

Crested Wood Partridge
Cabot's Tragopan
Great Blue Turaco
Himalayan Monal
Vulturine Guineafowl
I think the birds I miss the most are the Peking robins (Leiothrix lutea). They were so cute and would come to eat bugs out of your hand.
Carolina Parakeet (an extinct species of parrot native to eastern US)
Pitohui (a really pretty poisonous bird)
[url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Choise.....igeon]Choiseul Crested Pigeon (discovered barely 100 years ago and was extinct soon after being described by European explorers)
Idk, there's lots of really pretty extinct birds... but maybe that's not what you're looking for. :D

There is one more... interesting thing, called Swampknock, or Pereklest around here. NEver seen it's photoes and managed to make only one myself. Bird is small, has very long and thin "needle-like" beak and produces a creepy whistling sound. Can be found in European folklore.
If you'd like, I can sketch it.

As an anecdote though, the window in the corridor on the third floor of our house seems to regularly attract a male red fody (no idea whether it's always the same one). It keeps knocking on the glass with its beak every morning, go figure.

I love it's "head fur". XD
Another special kind in Taiwan:

And Mikado Pheasant, also a special kind in Taiwan, we have it on our paper money.

I hope that helps. :)
And I SWEAR I saw a European Pied Flycatcher in the garden last week.
The goldcrest and the firecrest are the two smallest birds that live here, I believe the Great Bustard is the biggest/heaviest one. The Golden Oriole is probably the most exotic looking one... (never saw them irl)
Whenever I'm in Vienna I freak out over the hooded crows that are EVERYWHERE. Here we only have black crows (or at least the hooded crow is very rare, I never saw one).
If I go to zoos or places with lots of water (including cities with canals!), I also always see plenty of storks and herons :D Blue and night herons stealing your lunch! YAY BIRDS
As far as birds I don't know, well the most crazy random bird people can think of...I've learned about some cool new ones already and I am super happy! "Plate-billed Mountain-toucan" is good! I have seen it before but didnt know what it was. So stuff like that that people love and is hardly ever mentioned, like asities, mot mots, bellbirds, sunbirds, and so on.
I also like great-tailed grackles. They look like crows, are smart like crows, but got a much prettier voice! When I first heard them, I didn't yet get a visual of them, and thought they were parrots, so diverse was their vocal range! They also have some rad irridesence going on and are fascinating to watch.
http://www.jrcompton.com/photos/The.....-GTGrackle.jpg handsome stud grackle
http://davidlarkin.files.wordpress......le-female2.jpg hot babe grackle
I'd show you their voice as well but youtube only brings up other kinds of grackles with far less interesting voices, not the great-tail.
Also, very unrelated but we have wild peach-face lovebirds in my area too. We think a pet broke out and flourished. xD
isn't he rockin! I love grackles, could seriously watch and listen to 'em all day!
I photographed the hell out of those when I was in Florida! (or at least, I tried.)
..Doesn't help that my only camera is an old as dirt cell phone either :D
I love pigeons! ...but most species are not new to me.
Also these two surprised me, and won my heart a few months ago: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicobar_pigeon
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White-.....d_Green_Pigeon
Also that eagle is really rad, I love how fluffy he looks!
...I think the Nicobar pigeon is the most common pig in aviaries.
Go-away-birds http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grey_Go-away-bird
Turacos? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turaco
Bleeding Heart Doves http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luzon_Bleeding-heart They're quite macabre with their little red spot. But so pretty!
Hoatzin/Stinkbird http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stinkbird
Hoopoes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoopoe Not sure if you know about them. They throw poop at intruders. XD
Stygian Owl http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stygian_Owl or look at this: http://www.travellingbirder.com/tri.....tygian-Owl.jpg In some photos their spots look like screaming faces and.. and.. pure evil. :C
Eurasian Coots. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurasian_coot These guys are really creepy. Reminds me of the Plague Doctor's beak masks. They also are Jesus because they walk on water, somewhat. And tend to get sudden aggressions, attacking everyone and everything. Or something like that.
Tiputip http://www.feuerwanze.de/suedafrika/Tiputip.JPG don't have a wiki article for that guy, but it's a cuckoo, looks badass though.
Soo, these are the more fancy kinds of birds I could recall from going through endless lists of birds to find inspiration for bird characters. Hopefully some will strike your fancy too. :D
Burrowing owls. We used to have them all over my elementary school I went to, fenced off so kids wouldn't mess with them. But they would sit on the fence staring at you sometimes.
Take a peek through this list:
http://floridabirdingtrail.com/inde.....rvation/birds/
I imagine many of these birds aren't very common to the northern half of the country.

YAY indigo and orange.
Let's see... In North America we have the Pyrrhuloxia and the chachalaca. Those aren't particularly well-known.
There's also the pitohui, the world's only poisonous bird; the kea, a sort of plain-looking parrot from New Zealand that is very clever; and the hoatzin or stinkbird that maintains a primitive, archaeopteryx-like claw.
Here's an article on that last one: http://www.damninteresting.com/the-.....inkbird-enigma

http://mariangutu.deviantart.com/ar.....rbet-179319659 Crested barbet-- I don't know anything about them other than they look like they may be in the grosbeak family? Honestly dunno.
http://wow-sky.deviantart.com/art/G.....sant-187870039 Golden pheasant...I think this is either an immature male or someone pulled out the rest of his tailfeathers. D:

http://mariangutu.deviantart.com/ar.....sher-179319763 You probably know kingfishers pretty well but this Great Kingfisher is just kind of awesome looking.
http://deseonocturno.deviantart.com.....g-ll-188799583 Any of the non-European starling starlings, if you don't know them already. They're all pretty awesome.
http://swordtemper.deviantart.com/a.....-Tit-188337103 I haven't seen this particular tit before and I must say I rather adore it.
http://greyfading.deviantart.com/ar.....tics-189444109 Koil bustard? I thought the name was a typo, but no, confirmed it! Where have these guys been hiding all my life?
MAN looking for birds YOU probably haven't heard of is hard. D8
barbets are cool, i've got a skin of that species. that reminds me i need to edit my scans of barbet sketches...
This songis from the documentary Winged Migration. I'm certain you're prolly not going to go out of your way to purchase it; though you can always listen to the song and pretend.
http://torontozoo.com/ExploretheZoo.....p?AnimalId=640
they are about the size of a large pigeon if it helps.
its already been mentioned, but I'm going to say it again; Hoatzins
and also the northern whiteface owl AKA the transformer owl :U http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCgbYnNAbSM
Birds aren't my strong suite when it comes to naming cool animals, I know more about fish, some mammals, insects, arachnids, and crustaceans (I'd say arthropods as a whole but I'm a tad rusty with my myriapods lol)
Some say Slender Mode makes it look like a tree branch for camouflage, while others(& I) say it looks downright sinister.

If they could talk, you could probably have a conversation with them.

These guys are one of my favorites right now. They are so wicked. <3
CHUCK-WILL'S WIDOW (Caprimulgus carolinensis) I've heard dozens and dozens of these, as I used to do nightjar surveys back when I lived in southern Missouri, where there are three species of native Caprimulgids. They call most often and vigorously when the moon is full. :>

African gymnogene
Bateleur
Caracara
White gyrfalcon (a personal favorite)
and some parrots
Sun conure
white-capped caique and the other caique I can't remember
military macaw
Indian ringneck (fairly popular but absolutely beautiful)
Eclectus (same as above)
and of course, green peafowl (not blue!)
I take it you're familiar with all of these already then? Damn, I thought I was getting somewhere with a few of those.
I used to care for a military macaw named Mr. Burd. We gurgled at each other a lot.
They are so full of character and sit in a line up on gum tree branches!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:P.....ng_in_tree.jpg
They have some of the most expressive faces out there.

Varied Thrush: http://www.kwantlenpark.ca/animals/.....ied-thrush.JPG (found one injured on a river bank once, that's how I found out about them...pretty birds)
These are all birds I find interesting.
This journal is full of amazingly timed responses...just a half hour ago I was reading about palm toos and senegals.
Oriole - http://www.superstock.co.uk/stock-p.....ages/4179-8091
Crimson Bellied Conure
Bearded Vulture
Griffon Vulture
Green Aracari
Cormorants
These are the only birds I really have any experience with... my dad's property is bordered by Russian Olive trees and in the warmer months, his yard becomes a charnel house.... they impale food items onto thorns, such as barbed wire or the thorny Russian Olive branches, and shrikes will go after food items that are much bigger than them, small snakes, and mice, as well as large insects. It's like a creepy, macabre Christmas festivity. :/ I don't know how common they are as I've never seen one anywhere but Wyoming, but I'm sure they go other places too, since they migrate.
Not that they're especially rare, or physically remarkable in appearance. No, what impresses me about the Arctic tern is that it's such a nasty, aggressive little bugger. I once (just once) strayed near the nest of one, and got shrieked at and beaten up for it -- and this by a creature that looks so ethereally beautiful when on the wing.
Top tip: if you hold your walking-stick up vertically then the tern will go for that instead of your eyeballs.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nBB34hdh2UQ
What about a spurwing plover? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:S.....-Plover444.jpg These guys are everywhere and well known for dive bombing anyone that gets too close to the nest.

A couple that I found striking :
Ocellated Turkey
Livingsone's Turaco
Spix Macaw
caique
rosella parakeet
bourke's parakeet
I love how Bourke's resemble little pink falcons
Some of my favourite local birds include:
Varied Sittella http://birdsinbackyards.net/species.....ta-chrysoptera
White-browed babbler http://birdsinbackyards.net/species.....-superciliosus (I love their scientific name, it suits them because they are super silly birds ;) )
Brown/White browed/White throated tree creeper (link to brown) http://birdsinbackyards.net/species.....teris-picumnus
Rainbow bee-eater (though you know about bee-eaters I just adore these birds. http://birdsinbackyards.net/species/Merops-ornatus
Red-capped Robin http://birdsinbackyards.net/species.....ica-goodenovii
Chestnut quail-thrush http://www.threatenedspecies.enviro......aspx?id=10168
Grey fantail (they have one of my all-time favourite songs) http://birdsinbackyards.net/species.....ura-fuliginosa
Rufous Whistler http://birdsinbackyards.net/species.....la-rufiventris
Diamond Firetail http://birdsinbackyards.net/species.....pleura-guttata
I could go on, but I'll attempt to restrain myself :P I doubt whether they're the most obscure birds, but they're some of my local favs and they all have their own character, gotta love 'em =)
maybe a lorikeet..? http://blog.syracuse.com/zoo/2007/0.....ieStraight.jpg
there's also apparently a red lorikeet.. http://www.rictus.com/viz/photos/se.....d-lorikeet.jpg
What about a ruddy duck?(I absolutely love these) =3 http://www.bird-friends.com/pics/Ru.....ddyDuck2LR.jpg
Others may include:
Tropicbirds are also gorgeous seabirds - includes Red-Billed, Red-Tailed, and White-Tailed species http://www.outdooralabama.com/image.....Tropicbird.jpg
Someone already listed the Brown Creeper, which I initially thought of adding before reading it.
Blackburnian Warblers are awesome little guys, and beautiful to see! http://www.ownbyphotography.com/Bla.....an-Warbler.jpg
I'll assume you already know of all of these, but enjoy the photos in any case!
