One of the things I love about the web, is mp3 trading. My favorite places are currently record blogs, run by guys who love old records, and love sharing them. You can find everything from 80's club mixes, to the greatest hits of forty years ago.
There's also a whole subfandom out who are all about WEIRD old records, and many of these guys have set up websites where you can grab these forgotten...well, I won't use the word gems. Let's just stick with "forgotten."
One such..um..."forgotten" is LENNY & THE SQUIGTONES. If you're old enough to remember a TV show called Laverne & Shirley, and the characters from it called Lenny & Squiggy, you'll probably know exactly what I'm talking about.
Lenny & Squiggy were 50's style goofball greasers, who drove a beer truck for Schotz Brewery, in Milwakee, and had a band. And it appears that they actually recorded an album. It's a bizarre mix of comedy and rock n' roll, of the 50's variety.
But what really caught my attention was the back cover.
On Guitar/Clarinet/Vocals..... NIGEL TUFNEL. And you can see from the photo, it really is Nigel Tufnel, aka Christopher Guest, still in his proto-60's beatle suit.
When you consider that David St. Hubbins was played by Michael McKean, aka Lenny, of Lenny & squiggy... (And while I can't confirm or deny it, at this point - the Bass player bears more than a striking resemblance to Harry Shearer, AKA DEREK SMALLS.) ...well, what we have here could be considered the prototype for SPINAL TAP.
It's well worth a listen, especially for the die-hard TAP-head.
You can grab a copy at my current favorite record blog:

And while you're there, don't forget to dig through the site for some other fun downloads, including old Dr Demento radio shows.
Cheers!
