Supervisors stalking thier subordinates

Is it ethical for employers to make generalizations about thier employees based on how they interpret infromation on sites like Facebook, Deviant Art or FurAffinity?
When we post information online about ourselves is it right for someone who decides whether we earn a living to use that information to make assumptions about our character? Should employers only judge their employees based on their behavior/performance in the workplace? Should employers also be able to use employee's personal artistic expressions made outside of work on their own time to judge their ability to serve them inside the workplace?
