Bounce Music

Bounce Music (taken from Wikipedia Article)
Excerpt : Bounce is characterized by call and response style party and Mardi Gras Indian chants and dance call-outs that are frequently hypersexual. These chants and call-outs are typically sung over the "Triggerman beat," which is sampled from the songs "Drag Rap" by the Showboys, "Brown Beat" by Cameron Paul, and also Derek B's "Rock The Beat".[2] The sound of bounce has primarily been shaped by the recycling and imitation of the "Drag Rap" sample: its opening chromatic tics, the intermittent shouting of the word "break," the use of whistling as an instrumental element (as occurs in the bridge), the vocoded "drag rap" vocals and its brief and repetitive melody and quick beat (which were produced with use of synthesizers and drum machines and are easily sampled or reproduced using like-sounding elements).[3]

The video that got the world's attention (over a dozen hears late for the genre, but hey) : Mr. Ghetto's 'Wal-Mart' NWS

The Reality
Now, this is all fun and fine, but if you think you pegged the subculture of this wonderfully ridiculous, repetitive-enough-to-have-an-aural-seizure dance music, you're wrong.
Right now (and for the past couple of years,) you need to know about Big Freedia. (video)
Big Freedia (pronounced “Free-da”) is the undisputed “Queen Diva” of Bounce Music, and performs six or more times a week in various venues throughout her home town of New Orleans.
Big Freedia is one of the most popular Bounce performers, especially an off-shoot called 'Sissy Bounce;' a (get this) ghetto-gay friendly Bounce style. Not your typical Hip-Hop genre. Big Freedia is also a drag queen.
Why is this important? Because, unlike the normal hip-hop (and related) stereotypical culture, let me describe for you a 'typical' Sissy-Bounce setting.
In a rock-and-roll dive bar (recently formerly owned by White Zombie's Sean Yseult,) on the edge of a bad neighborhood, you can see a 6-foot tall (in heels) Drag Queen (Big Freedia) with a fur coat and massive sunglasses in the scorching heat of summer singing in the middle of a dance floor to a mix of straight or gay black men and women (of nearly all ages,) and an equal amount of tattooed, pink-haired white punk girls booty-bouncing and p-popping with the best of the best rap-video background dancers, among the heavily-tattooed and moustachioed rock-bar patrons, and off-duty cops. I even saw one goth chick impress a gaggle of black dancer-girls while booty-bouncing in a leg cast, pivoting on her cane..
That, my friends, is New Orleans, in a nutshell. Not Bourbon Street. Not the Tammany-Hall-esque pantheon of elected snake-oil salesmen. Not the trigger-happy NOPD. Not the near-submerged roofs from aerial photos, or the illusion that we're more than half-rebuilt.
We're well aware it's silly, grotesque and downright annoying, but it's also... kinda fucking awesome.
As promised, the best thing life has to offer.*
*all things considered if you enjoyed this post.
(Close your door and turn up your speakers.) (Possibly NWS, but mildly and hilariously PG.)
