Controversial meme
Wasn't tagged, but I like to steal memes. It will have to do until I can get a mic to do Li's meme tagging. Well I'll answer these as serious as I can, and be honest. I'll explain further if I feel it's necessary.
[01] Do you have the guts to answer these questions and re-post as The Controversial Survey?
That question seems fairly stupid considering if I am posting a meme about it, then I am answering it. But ok, for the sake of answering: Yes.
[02] Would you do meth if it was legalized?
No. Considering that metholated spirits have chemicals that turn you blind from over use, and also considering I don't drink this was a fairly simple question. Metholated spirits are cheap yes, but considering the risks behind it, I don't think anyone should do it. So I believe it should remain illegal.
[03] Abortion: for or against it?
Personally I'm all for the right to be able to Abort, but not necessarily Abortion. Sorry, there I go adding an unnecessary level of complexity. And another point: I'm pro abortion up to a certain point. The real issue of abortion is when is the foetus considered 'alive'. That's the real issue, as some people think it's murder to kill an unborn CHILD, and some would think it's not an issue to be rid of an unborn FOETUS. I put those in caps to emphasize the viewpoints people hold. Therefore, whether you're pro abortion or not is based on whether you view a foetus as being alive. Hence why, I say I think people should be able to abort if they want.. but I'm not necessarily pro abortion.
[04] Do you think the world would fail with a female president?
Well not really, I mean the world has had plenty of female leaders (even China has had a few Empress). I personally feel there wouldn't really be a difference. If I were to use history, then actually a female leader would be better than a male leader (although this is mainly because the few female leaders there are in history have had to be seen as better than male alternatives otherwise their authority would not have been accepted in the first place). But logically there is no real reason why the world would fail with a male or female president (assuming both sexes applying are qualified to lead of course).
[05] Do you believe in the death penalty?
Yes. Although I believe it should only be applied for serious crimes (eg rape, murder etc). I often hear from friends about the crime rates in the US, and even the UK (although UK is teenagers mostly which I feel is sad). Anyway, there is crime in china. But less so than in those two countries. We apply a death penalty, serious crimes are treated harshly, but as a result the people have safety (or at least the illusion of safety from crime) which I feel is something people should have. Most crimes are also caused by repeat offenders. Another reason why a death penalty I feel is necessary. There are of course many problems with death penalties (such as what if the wrong person is convicted?) but viewing this from a result stand point, sadly I think the death penalty achieves more than prisons do.
[06] Do you wish marijuana would be legalized already?
No. It's a drug. My personal feelings are it's not good cause it's a drug, and drug-addictiveness is also an issue, many people's lives are ruined by drugs. As not everyone can handle drug use. Therefore with the interests of the majority of the people at hand, I believe it shouldn't be legalized.
[07] Are you for or against premarital sex?
To be honest this issue, I don't care either way. I don't have an opinion on this. The concept of premarital sex (and whether you should or you shouldn't) really stems from religions, as seen below I'm not a follower of western religions.
[08] Do you believe in God?
I don't believe in Gods of any kind. In china we see no difference between a philosophy, and a religion. So for that reason I follow many philosophies, and would call that as being religious.
[09] Do you think same sex marriage should be legalized?
I did a bit of reading to make sure I answered this correctly. Now from what I understand there are two concepts of marriage. However, the MAIN definition of marriage is to be 'joined under holy matrimony', i.e. it's a religious event. Therefore it's not really an issue of whether same sex marriage should be legalized but rather that the various religions should allow this. Personally, I believe it should be, but I also wonder... Is it really necessary?
Surely if you truly love someone, something as trivial as a ceremony is not going to make a difference? (feel free to answer that one readers)
[10] Do you think it's wrong that so many Hispanics are illegally moving to the USA?
No. Economically speaking... the US needs it and needs it NOW more than ever with the recession. I don't like the idea of illegal immigration as I dislike the idea of illegal entry, I believe everyone should have to legally enter a country. However, with the situation of the US economy as it is, an influx of cheap labour (and population + therefore people who start buying products in the US) will actually assist the US economy to slow down the effects of the recession. The main way to get out of a recession is to increase spending. Having more people enter the country (even if it's illegal) will mean more people spending within the US. Therefore, I feel it's wrong that people enter illegally, but I also feel at this moment that it is necessary.
[11] A twelve year old girl has a baby, should she keep it?
This question seems to hearken back to the abortion question. This is another reason why I think the right to abort should be allowed. Should she keep a baby is an interesting question. Does this mean should the child be aborted? Or does this mean should she keep it, or should social services keep it? In all honesty, no. She shouldn't keep it. A 12 year old is not ready for parental concerns, and does not have the income to support a child (as she is still underage for employment). Therefore, no.
[12] Should the alcohol age be lowered to eighteen?
The alcohol age here is 18... ah well. I'll answer this anyway, although I'm running mainly on what I think is the case, not what I know is the case, as I don't drink. Ok I believe it's the case here that 18 can drink beers and other low-alcohol content drinks, but I think that spirits (whisky, vodka) have a higher age limit. I'm inclined to say no. Mainly due to health reasons.
[13] Should the war in Iraq be called off?
Hmm. A year ago I would have said yes. 2 years ago I would have definately said yes. Now though... now sadly it's needed. As mentioned above, the US economy needs to experience greater spending to get out of its recession. Wars are sadly, HUGELY beneficial for economies while they are on. Economies at war actually grow faster than they do in peace time. THe best example of this is WW2. The real reason most countries got out of the great depression was the arrival of WW2. It's a similar idea here to. At the moment, the US government has most likely got a lot of back orders for equipment, ammunition etc. All of which injects money into the US economy, however, if the war is ended... all the orders are cancelled, all production halted... and the flow of money ceases entirely. Sadly, ending the war right now (although it's not even much of a war to be honest) would not be beneficial for the US.
From a moral point of view I believe the US shouldn't have gone into Iraq. It's not the place of the US to govern the world. This concept actually makes many nations and groups within them hate the US, and explain acts of terrorism, as various groups lash out against the percieved 'dictatorship' that is the act of 'policing' the world. And to be honest the act of 'policing' the world, really means pushing forward US interests as the expense of other nations independance. In some cases it is required, but the US by intervening tends to make things worse, as the act of intervention opens up whole new problems.
[14] Assisted suicide is illegal: do you agree?
The question here I believe is asking if I agree that assisted suicide should be legal or illegal. I believe it may be an attempt to subtly bring up the controversial issue of Euthanasia. As this is a controversial meme, I believe that it is attempting to illicit a response regarding euthanasia. So I will answer that question. Euthanasia is the concept of killing people who have terminal diseases and/or are in a vegatative state that is non-revivable. There are many reasons for and against euthanasia. In an ideal world, I would say yes, euthanasia should be allowed. I don't think it's right to keep someone on a life-support if he can never do anything but sit there or feels pain constantly. In an ideal world, I'd support euthanasia. However, in the world we live in, there is likely to be abuse of the euthanasia system. I believe assisted suicide should not be legal for that very reason.
[15] Do you believe in spanking your children?
Yes. There is an expression in chinese. Here I translate for you: 'I beat you, because I love you.'
The concept being that parents will beat their children (spank them) for under-performing not because they hate their child, but because they want to get the child to truly try his best, so that because he will try harder, his future will be better.
[16] Would you burn an American flag for a million dollars?
YES. Most definately. But if you were to ask me to burn a Chinese flag.... :D
But to be serious I believe the question is appealing to national pride. So therefore the question for me would have to change to read: 'Would you burn a Chinese flag for a million dollars?'
I actually don't think I would, it's a symbol of our government, and it should be something I'm proud of, and (considering my job) to burn it would look like I had no faith in my government. Futhermore, the flag is a symbol of the nation, I believe it to be somewhat direspectful to our ancestors who helped forge the People's Republic out of their blood.
[17] Who do you think would make a better president? McCain or Obama?
I do not know enough about either candidate and what they plan to do in their presidential term to be able to say which I feel would make a better president. I'm hoping (seeing as Obama has already won) that Obama was the better one.
[18] Are you afraid others will judge you from reading some of your answers?
Everyone judges. Fact. Those who claim not to judge others lie. They have judged that person already, and have decided he does not offend them. They may not know it, or may decide to ignore that fact, but ultimately everyone has already judged those they meet based on what they say, look, feel etc. Physically we're unable NOT to form judgements. Regardless of how small or large said judgement is, it has already been made. So the question isn't really am I afraid to be judged by others, it is really asking:
'Am I afraid that others will judge me differently after reading this.'
So I'd point out that I'm not forcing my views on anyone here, I'm just stating my answers and my reasons for answering such. I also believe that those I consider friends are friends because we like each other. Not because we happen to believe in the same ideals.
I might as well bring out something today, though I won't name names. I was accused as being 'closed minded' and 'militaristic' and this person no longer talks to me, which I found rather upsetting. But I ask, who is the one with the closed mind? Is it the one who thinks differently? Or the one who cannot accept another person's values?
Although I'm well aware that I have values that some would abhor, I find it saddening that the person in question was someone who claimed to be open minded, and yet acted so closed when hearing of things they'd rather not. I also know I have a closed mind. There's not really much one can do about that.
Now that I think about it, I'd like to ask another question.
Is a closed mind more or less open than an open mind?
As an open mind can be even more closed than a closed mind on account of it's suppossed openness. Confusing no? PM me if you want to debate any of this. I love debates. But don't bother if you're just going to rant. I like debates/discussions. Being ranted at is not a debate. It's a one-way monologue.
