Like I said, this is just me thinking out loud in order to give some physical substance to a few theories I have regarding the game. I won't post them all, but a few off the top of my head. I'd LOVE to get to talk out some of my theories in length, so feel free to voice your own opinions on matters. Warning, this will contain spoilers for Five Nights at Freddy's 3.

The souls inside the animatronics are limited by their programming. This is best seen in FNAF3 end night mini games where the animatronics are unable to enter the back room, as stated by the phone guy that they could not even perceive it. In addition, Springtrap is FORCED to head towards the BB sound even though any intelligent being could not think their were actually think there were any children around. I'll go one step further in saying that the souls inhabiting the animatronics have to find loopholes inside the programming to carry out what they do. In FNAF1 the flimsy excuse that the animatronics perceive you as an endo skeleton without a suit being the reason they try to kill by stuffing you inside a suit. In truth, it may be the souls tampering with the animatronics perception of people in order to carry out this act.

The FNAF3 phantoms are real, and are ACTIVELY trying to get you killed for their own purposes....namely to get Springtrap killed. As stated in night 1 there is a significant risk that the place may burn down, hence the real reason you may be there in the first place, to prevent that from happening. The phantoms LOOK burn, subconsciously projecting their desire to happen onto their astral forms. They WANT the place to burn so that Springtrap may burn with it.
