Steven Universe - Theorizing *spoilers*

Peridot called Garnet "a filthy war machine" in the most recent episode. I've been thinking that it might be because Peridot belongs to a set of gems that don't have weapons. She never used one, and the only thing that seemed to give her powers were the limb enhancers which clearly weren't part of her gemself.
It could also be because Garnet is a fusion, and there seems to be some dislike of fusions from homeworld gems. The extended intro also mentions Garnet defending the Earth because it's a place she "can exist as me" which implies that one homeworld she wouldn't be able to do that.
I also didn't see Lapis with a manifest weapon anywhere during the many fights she was involved in. Maybe Pearl, Garnet, and Amethyst are all considered "warmachines" because they can manifest weapons, with each gem having a highly specialized purpose like different types of ants (worker, soldier, queen, etc.).

FA+

I do think the show has gotten great.
And dispite Garnet having weapons.. ruby n saphire dont seem to have em.
though they do seem to have elements. I still wonder the nature of gems
with two names.. Yellow Diamond n Rose Quartz being the only examples
and total mystery.
Pearl does have the whole "royal guard" and teacher/trainer type attitude.
Yeah that's interesting I don't know if its special to be a two name grm. Maybe they're a leader class of gems.
Stronger than you is MY FAVORITE scene from the entire show though. Garnet is such a badass.
Did you notice the faceplate getting smashed out of order though? :( I'd like to see a version of the fight where it's reordered properly.
Just keep an eye on the floor in Jailbreak, particularly when you hear Jasper's heavy stomps coming into the room, or when Garnet and Jasper are sizing one another up from across the way. There are a few good images of it, though I'm sure you could find stills online. For Sworn to the Sword, it's a bit harder to catch, because they go by it so fast. Just watch Steven and Connie when they get off the port-pad and run up the stairs. You'll see the emblem on the wall they pass. It basically lays it all out there, but it's awfully easy to miss.
That's one of the things I love about the show. Half of the lolrandom/Adventure Time-like episodes from earlier in the series have very specific reasons for existing, and what seemed random/wacky, suddenly takes on an awful lot of meaning.
That same theory holds that Peridot is a similar creation. She's designed for more intellectual work/service duties, and for interfacing with gem tech.
We know Pearl is the technician of the group, and she's also the one who interfaced with the ship from homeworld. Her primary secondary ability (holograms) also seems to be mostly a tool for strat/teaching, rather than actual battle, though she's obviously adapted for combat training as well. It's hard to say about the weapon, though we know she can retrieve various objects through her gem. It's possible she was taught how to do it afterward, or maybe it's meant to be more of an honor-guard sort of 'weapon for show,' that she turned into something more potent.
As far as Lapis is concerned, apparently the show's creators have weighed in that water IS her weapon and not just a secondary ability like future vision or the Sonic spin dash. I'm not 100% on that, or any of this really. It's all just theory until we know more, which is part of what makes this show so appealing.
1. I thought that Jasper was calling her defective specifically because they defected from Homeworld. It's pretty clear that all the Gems are computers too, so I wouldn't be surprised if rising up against Homeworld means that you're generally defective.
2. I thought the Sworn to the Sword thing was more about Steven's girlfriend not being made for fighting (because she's a human). I know that they're both singing the song at the same time, so I'm a little torn over that interpretation. I like yours a lot :)
3. I was curious about the bandages that she produced from her gem. Has she made anything else in the show on screen? I can't remember anything besides her blade.
4. I am curious if the sonic spin dash counts as a secondary ability, or if it's just a maneuver. Both Amethyst and Jasper have done it. Usually in shows like this they don't repeat abilities until they've shown a bunch of them (it takes a long while before Heroes ever showed two mutants with the same ability).
5. That makes sense. She did make her wings out of water which would be my #1 reason for saying that it's her weapon (since she basically manifests the water from nothing). Maybe has that as her primary and secondary ability. I'm also curious who trapped her in the hand mirror. Some implications from the show that it was the crystal gems.
2) Oh, I'm almost positive she's singing about herself as much as she is about Connie. Pearl's line is, "deep down, you know, you weren't 'built' for fighting," while Connie's line is "deep down, I know, that I'm just a human." Now that might have just been a slip of the tongue, thinking in gem terms, rather than human, but given how much of that song is essentially a flashback, I think the intent is pretty clear. And of course, you have the various slips of "do it for Her, that is to say, you do it for Him." It's really an amazing song, not only because of what it reveals about the characters, but how directly it parallels the arc of the episode.
3) She's also produced police tape in Lars and the Cool Kids, and Lapis' mirror.
4) It's hard to know, to be honest, but it seems to be a signature for both of them. Amethyst is also built a bit more like Jasper, which goes back to the idea of a warrior caste. I've wondered if there are technicians, elementals, and straight up warriors, but it's waaaaaay too early to say one way or the other on that. One thing is certain, I'd play the hell out of a tabletop Crystal Gems RPG.
5) They found it at the galaxy warp, so it's unlikely they put her there. Pearl is surprised/terrified to find out that it's sentient, or powerful enough to become so. There's a lot of speculation that some gem tech is (or was) also made up of gems. Peridot's, "you're going to HARVEST me?" might suggest so. There's definitely a bit of guilt there, but I think it's less, "we did this" and more, "we didn't even think to try and fix this." That's sort of an ongoing theme through-out the show, the idea that they're bubbling all this corrupted gems, likely as a mandate from Rose Quartz, but with little idea what to do with the gems/shared afterwards. Steven is likely the key there.
Also, I think there was a tweet that said Lapis' water stuff -was- her weapon, and Jasper's got her helmet. So Peridot's just the odd man out there at the moment.
(yes I know it's more complex than that, but if we were to discuss the nature of Gems fully we'd be here for weeks)
For a while I thought that perhaps her entire body was cybernetic, trapping her gem like Lapis' was in the mirror, or Desert Glass and her pillow, and that once she was released she'd 'revert' to a more friendly personality. Sadly no.
And perhaps a weapon is something you need to consciously develop, or even create.
Also: what good luck for Lapis to be stranded on Earth... and not Mars.
And yeah, that is definitely something to consider. I think they probably look very similar, but just by their shifting nature, and ability to express themselves through their forms, our Pearl probably looks a bit different, while the average pearl has a more uniformed look. Peridot even mentions that our Pearl is a "fancy one" which implies she looks somewhat different, and possibly that there are different qualities of pearls.
