Adoptable, adoptability, adoptive

I see bunch of artists do these "adoptable" things, where they basically sell the same image dozen times with minor variations, and apparently people pay some serious money for it. So um...what's up with that?
I honestly don't get it. What do people actually get when they "adopt" a generic mass produced character?
Asking here cause I fear fan retribution if I go ask stupid questions in popular threads :)

"OH BUT THIS IS A MASS-PRODUCED CHARACTER MADE BY THE FAMOUS ARTIST -namehere-"
They're items made for hoarding. Think: People who normally would buy mass-produced decorative items at a store or generic action figures or collectible prints.. or someshit. Same mindset applies to these digital 'designs'. Whether they're worth it is up to the potential buyers I suppose. :B
But you gotta file this under the 'clutter that nobody really needs and that is bought because of an impulse to have it' category. There is not much rationality involved, it is just luxury item shopping.
(That really does seem to be what the "it thing" is when I think about it, but with popularity instead of future monetary value.)
I'm guilty of getting adoptable chars, but so far they've all been 1-off designs and not just "here's 12, pick your color scheme".
