I'd hate to be that guy but this sounds like something that could easily be dealt with by using a UPS system. As soon as the power goes out, the system is meant to start beeping. That would tell you to save your work and either shut down or wait for the power to come back on.

UPS means uninterruptable power supply. It's basically a battery that supplies power instantly when the grid power dies. But only for several minutes usually

When the power goes out this kicks in and lets you know 'Hey man save your shit cause the power went out. You get 5 mins!'

The replies pretty much have got you covered. One thing to look out for though is the fact that they measure the power in VA (Volt-Amps) because a higher load will reduce the time available. I can't give you any good pointers since I have one of the much more expensive ones but I can say that a large power supply (such as a 1kW power supply) will drain the UPS faster than a smaller one (300W). Same goes for more stuff plugged into one UPS vs less stuff plugged into one UPS.

If all you need is time to save all your work and shut down your computer safely, then a lower end UPS will do just fine. If the PC is a gaming rig with a large power supply, then you might want to look either at the mid-range or the higher end of the scale.

I would gladly pay 50 bucks to save possibly hours and hours of work.

When your comp shuts down there is a chance a file could become corrupted. So even if you are a good child and save often you could be screwed out of hours of work.

This happens all the time to people and there is almost nothing you can do once it is corrupted. I have only saved one file from that fate and lost many.

Oh god. You have no idea how bad it got for me before. I managed to run a computer to the ground due to all the power cuts I used to have. This was before I found out what surge protectors were, and then what a UPS was.

It happens!
When working on a file for 20 hours it stings to have the power go out then discover that it is just a pixilated rainbow when you get back up and running.

Rip life hours. Rip.

I thought you were talking about an autosave. I think that may be a flaw of the program then, a writing operation should not run on a file you manualy created and unless the outage is at a point a writing operation happens, there's no way a file could be corrupted..

Actualy as tech support I recomend them. they are low end UPS that give you 20 minutes. And they are like 50 bucks

tbh with the ammount of losses ive had ive lost over $400+ woth of time and work in the past 3 weeks with all these storms- so it would be a valid idea for me personally

They are definitely worth it, and I'd recommend getting one. Some UPS rigs, depending on type of pc/extras you're using, can run for upto two hours; they can be life savers in not only saving files before the power drains so you don't lose work, but also letting you shut down your pc manually to avoid damage

Where i live currently you might expect a power outage once a year
Old houses ive lived in maybe multiple times a month

UPS also provides "cleaner" power but thats sorta irrelevant to anything.

That's awful.. We've had that issue before. Took our apartment maintenance months of complaining to change out the bad breaker.

I actually went through this but it wasnt a power outage....it was Windows 10 breaking my system file...T_T

That sucks. I'd have broken something by now, in a fit of rage. I hope it's resolved soon.
