i don't know what to do
9 years ago
if you follow me on twitter you'll know a bit about what's going on but I'll try to hash it out here, I'm typing on the train on mobile so apologies for any typos
Last semester, I went to my school's financial aid office to take out loans for the first time. at the time, they told me that my unmet cost for spring semester aka what I would have to pay, was only $800 after the loans. which was great and something I could definitely afford and put aside the money for
However for a while now my school bill has shown an amount much higher than that, when the semester finally started I checked in with financial aid and they said they would fix it
They didn't fix it. it was a misunderstanding on their end and there isn't anything they can do.
Instead of $800 I owe my school a little over 4k if I want to finish the semester
And I just... I don't know what to do. I can make the first payment on Monday but... I don't make that kind of money. I can only work four days a week since I go to school the other three, and I already spend all my time not at my job or at school working on my art but I still don't bring in enough
I have some savings but after all of this I'll be left with nothing. and I still need to pay for one class in the summer and another semester in the fall and im at a total loss and I am so frustrated and discouraged
I can't let all this hard work I've done to get here go to waste but I just have no idea how I'm going to come up with this money
Sorry for the long and emotional journal I'm not doing great and I'm kind of freaking out

the only thing like that i could imagine i'd qualify for would be for being queer i suppose
Also, it might help to move your financial aid to your name since you work. That way you'd get a little more help on your end. I had to do that for my last year in college because my dad had made a little more than normal the first year so they made us pay 2k out of pocket and only covered 1k even though we qualified for the state grant (he owns his own car painting business).

i can't. FAFSA forces me to file dependent until i've been living away from home from a certain amount of time, regardless of how much they actually help me financially
for NEXT year's FAFSA i'll be able to file independent but not until then
Sorry I can't offer more advice than that. D: Maybe talk to financial aid and explain your situation?
fall of last year, i had already paid off my entire tuition. i went into financial aid to ask for loans for this semester, spring, and what they told me at the time was "here is what you owe for spring if you take out loans." which was the 800.
what THEY thought i was doing, which was never communicated to me, was: using HALF of the payment i had ALREADY made for fall to pay for fall, then take out fall loans to pay for the other half, then take the OTHER half of that payment to put towards spring. and then, take out spring loans (which i did) to pay for the other half of spring.
but since they didn't TELL ME THAT, i didn't take out fall loans. i was under the impression that when they said "here's what your loans would cover", they meant ONLY the loans from spring. but now obviously i can't take out the loans from fall so i'm left with that last half of spring payment that didn't get covered.
i don't know if it was a simple misunderstanding or purposeful misdirection but this was told to me by the director of the financial aid office so
I'm sorry I don't have any advice to offer you, then... ;;
thanks anyway though! i appreciate it ;;
I'm not sure if your school does this, but if there's a deadline for the payment, is it possible to defer the deadline so you'd have more time to get the money you needed? Or like, since you're still a dependent and still under your parents oncome, they can help pay for you?
