Unpopular opinion time?

General
I am a sucker for helping out other artists, especially lately. I have been tossing my own art money right and left because I enjoy giving. I'm totally not saying this to toot my own horn, like its not at all a selfless act. lol
That same mentality generally has me pretty thrilled for artists who do well. They don't struggle for watchers, their sales are pretty quick and even sometimes demand way higher price tags than I can afford to pay for a digital file thats just going to sit in a folder.
I envy them sure, I've love to be able to drop a $100 adopt fee on something and have it sell XD.
but here is my potentially unpopular opinion moment..
I do not like, when it seems like those same artists are just relying ON their reputation, their name, to sell things for more.
Not for more than theyre worth, mind you. Worth is entirely subjective.
but.. when you ask $200 for a one-of piece thats lined out, shaded, not chibi'd or simplified, and then turn around and ask THE SAME price for a very simplified part of a batch with maybe some few small modifications to make it different, or even no differences other than paint job?.
I find myself a little conflicted with being thrilled that you can make a living off what you love, but at the same time I feel like youre snubbing your own watchers and the people who got you to this level of popularity when you couldn't ask those prices.
I'm sure some of it is jealousy.. but to my watchers if I ever get to that point. notable enough, skilled enough that I can demand $100+ for a single piece of work. Make sure I don't forget to offer a few things here and there for less. Make sure I dont rely on my popularity to carry me through moments of lazyness just to make a little extra.

This whole journal is extremely passive aggressive.
HOWEVER. I still maintain that I personally feel it looks a little less than considerate when an artist charges as much for a batch made, simple piece as they will for one that obvious time and effort was put into.
If people will buy it, good for the artist. I am thrilled they can support themselves with their craft. While I am not of the opinion people are owed just for watching, remember I am an artist as well so Ive heard a lot of the same sob stories and begging and complaining most of us have.. I also recognize that the only reason I get anywhere with selling art is because of the people who choose to support me and I DO feel I owe them something for spending their time and money on me.
I've always admired you as an artist and welcome alternate opinion and debate, but I hope you appreciate your own irony at telling someone to mind their own business on their own journal ;).
Pretty sure we can discuss a topic without being petty about it.
At the end of the day artists have to prioritize their work. Commissions, patreons and profit will always need to be at the top of that list if they are supporting themselves with their art. It's not being ungrateful to their followers, it's very simply a matter of business required to keep oneself in the black.
What I take issue with is the fact that this journal seems to be demeaning successful artists for having built their brand and profiting from it. And yes, I know you're going to say something along the lines of "Well that brand wouldn't exist without the watchers, so they owe the watchers something!" and no, they do not. We work damn hard to build our brand and earn a client base. Notice I said "earn", there. It is not something given to us for free. We work for each and every follower we get. We do not owe them anything for free beyond the art we're already posting for free.
Perhaps we might owe our audience more if we were to have a similar adsense service as Youtube users do, but we do not actually gain anything through views or favourites.
I think I need to correct something though, and it might be my fault through original wording though I thought I had touched on it in the post previous.
I dont think anyone is owed anything for free, or within in a certain price range. What I was getting at, in my long winded attempt to keep from rambling... Is I feel like pricing work that took twice as much time and care as work that was batch made to toss out quickly, is the same as charging the same for bulk product vs handmade.
The mentality that I project behind that is "I dont need to put the effort into it, people will pay for it to say they have something by me"
Now, you seem to be taking this pretty personally by saying "we" a lot. I am am artist as well, I draw daily, for hours. I do commissions, I do adopts. I struggle with pricing and with all the touchy little bullshit we sometimes get from people who dont have that commitment. So I say all this from an artists perspective, not a watchers.
I can count the number of people I have seen do, what I'm talking about, on one hand and have fingers left over.
I get what you're saying, its their right to price however they feel like. It's their right to toss together something half assed and put the same $$ on it as something they took care with. You're entirely correct, it is.
but it is kind of bullshit.
And considering the majority of the community includes time and effort into their pricing, I don't think I'm all that misplaced in my perception.
