The messy world of sexual consent

Too many people give sexual consent because they're afraid. Others give sexual consent because they don't want to hurt the feelings of the other person. How do we determine if the consent is truly good, and not done out of some weird kind of fear? I've been wrestling with this for a few years, now. I fear that a lot of my intimate and sexual experiences involved unacceptable levels of poor consent. Just because someone says yes, doesn't mean they truly want it.
Sucks, but people being dishonest with themselves and others is something that will never change.
