Generally, my response to oddly-constructed sentences is "What?"

Which is honestly the best response I could hope for. But I still feel the frustration nomatter what. Can't win.

Yeah, sometimes I'll be talking, and then all of a sudden, I'll be like "What was I talking about?" and completely lose my train of thought. Heck, I didn't just lose the train, I lost the whole station! Oh, and as to responding with "What?", I lament the fact that the english language has the same word to mean "I didn't hear that" and "I didn't understand that." Half the time, when my parents and I are watching something, and I go "Huh?!" at something really off-the-wall someone says, they'll replay it, thinking I just didn't hear it. Oh well, it's the only language I got, take it or leave it.

it's the internet! I've found out that it's made me not think before saying something, and you can't backspace in real life. So, as a result I've become incredibly verbose, rephrasing what I say and "clarifying" it 2,3, maybe even 4 times. Some people really hate it.

(by clarifying and verbose I mean saying the same thing over and over again with increasing levels of detail and understanding until I'm sure someone gets exactly what I mean)

Heh, I know what you mean. I've had the same thing happen to me a couple of times. It doesn't help that I also talk pretty fast. ^_^;;

So they ignore the part they didn't catch, focusing on what they did hear/catch, and are like, "I can't believe you said that!"

Makes me want to stab them. Or at least get out the Red-Sticker Bat...

I hear you Bree. I tend to use denotation quite specificaly and many people assume I use conotation and thus they "read in" to my words and get offended about things that were not meant to even be there. I say what I mean and mean what I say. No hidden meanings. I am blunt, crude, and honest, but I am not a mystic.

Do not worry too much about the articulation Bree. Just learn to recognize when someone took something wrong and stop argueing with them right away and stop and calmly say "My appology, it appears that I mispoke and gave you the wrong impresion. I meant to say...".

I've had that happen too, and it's just so easy to get frustrated because even if you've said the same thing a bunch of times, they'll only see it as what they want to see it as.

I believe I relate to your situation. Most of my peers around me can't understand what I'm saying half the time due to my broadened vocabulary. It becomes frustrating especially when you lose your patience and end up getting hated for it. Having the other person think you called them stupid of needing someone to explain something to them so that they understand what I'm saying. I'm constantly being accused of calling people stupid just because I get annoyed at them for not knowing what i meant the first time.

Seriously, though, people seem to get irritated over the dumbest things... and it's just so damned hard to explain certain things. Here's a way a friend explained the idea to me.

Describe 'blue' as you would to someone who was completely colorblind and had no knowledge of any other colors, or even of colors in general.

I have the opposite problem. I can communicate well, and when people ask me about complex technical subjects, I have little trouble partitioning them into manageable snippets that most people can understand. The trouble is, I don't "small talk." My idea of a successful conversation is to listen to a group of people for a while, and occasionally chime, "yeah, me too!"

I seriously envy people who can talk forever about nothing.

You get mean? I always imagined you responding to aggravation by puffing yourself up real big. And probably blowing away in the wind.

I have the same problem, but I'm gonna be arrogant and say it's not just because of my inability to find a good phrasing quickly. Half the time it's because the words I use ( words you, in some cases, have to use to express what I'm trying to say) are words that other people don't know the meaning of, and that they don't care to listen but decide beforehand what I'm going to say.
If I have to reduce my speech to Foreigner Talk, the nuances of what I say will be lost, but if I use the phrasings necessary for getting all the subtle shades in there, people often misunderstand me completely.

But I think the root of the problem really is that people today seem to walk around waiting for a reason to blow up in your face. They are constantly on guard, and expect you to attack them.

Don't you love how you can be articulate in your writing, conveying how you feel at the moment and then they call you emo or goth?

I have the exact same problem, pal.. but it's not an "As I get older" thing for me. I'm pretty sure I've always had the problem.

Or, at least, people can usually understand what I'm saying; the problems come when they can't understand WHY I'm saying it and that's why they get offended.

I wouldnt worry about it too much. persistence pays off in communication. besides king george and his dad both became presidents even though they daily mangle and mug the english language till its dead in a pool of blood.

Oh, totally know what you mean. On top of it I'm busy working on an early start for altzheimers, considering I can't ever remember proper names. "It's next to that store, the one with the, um..., yellow flag.... Next to that guy's house?"

I see that in action every day on the news. People interpret things in the most peculiar ways (Example: The Bible). Usually, in the ways most unfavorable to you. It seems to matter less and less how clearely you explain as people are less and less likely to understand--and more and more likely to spin it against you.

My speech far less articulate than my writing. Mine is halted, haphazard, and mushy as I try to come up with the words I want, only to settle on whatever will get me through it. But when I hang around smart people, they understand my points and can see my intelligence through the clutter of my speech.

For the people who misinterpret: It's their fault, not yours. You are one of the more articulate ones. Clearely you know the language. You use it effectively--which is why I actually read your journals and submission comments (otherwise something I don't do often).

People are just getting dumber. With things like our failing educational system, pollution, bad diet, lack of exersize, lack of recreation, Fox News, etc. It's not hard to see why.

I have a problem, too.

I find it harder to get work done on time.

Keep it short. To the point. No yadda yadda. Bang! Comprende? Talk in short. Sentences.

Hah! Then people say, "You were so curt!"

It'll be a big problem for me, since I'm going to be a voice actor. >.< Probably have to take classes to articulate better.
