Coronavirus & Furry Fandom
Yes, I know that everyone is a bit sick (pun unintended) and tired of the Coronavirus, it’s constantly on the news, the radio, on all social media, etc.
But, we as humans but also as furries are going through an interesting time right now. We as furries basically have our own economy within the fandom, and a big part of us has gone to a convention or has thought about travelling to one. The closure of borders, airporrs, seaports, places of work has already and will continue to have a big and negative impact. People will stop spending money on art, other type or furry themed items including fursuits, badges, woodwork, etc.
We are used to going to our favourite conventions each year. Wether it’s EF, CFZ, NFC, Gdakon, MFF, Anthrocon, etc, we each have a convention or more we expect to happen each year. This is actually the first time ever that some conventions might hve to skip this year’s edition. You see, Convention Organisers might not want to voluntarily cancel their conventions for the year, but when the government steps in with forced border closures, closures of airports, and banning orders of events over a certain amount of people (which countries such as Czech Republic, Slovakia, Switzerland and many others already have done) it means that we will need to get used to the idea that going to our favourite annual furry conventions is not always possible.
Take Confuzzled for instance. UK government is putting pressure on places of mass gatherings to close, and wants to put forward a bill where they can close any type of port immediatly. I am rather sure that CFZ will have to be cancelled, as it is only in 2 months. The chance is also high that other cons such as EF, will be forced to cancel. People can no longer travel across borders in europe without a good reason, airports are closing, and governments are banning mass events. As much as it is a shame, it is very likely that this will have to happen. Unless Coronavirus cases drop considerately. Which I doubt will happen within the next few months.
All in all: it’s gonna be a rather strange, interesting and negative year for the fandom. Anyone has got any thoughts?
