People like to think police are all evil, but when things like this happen and if it happens to YOU, what will you do> You call for help. That help is in the form of police, and without them people get hurt and die, like that child very easily could have.
Politics have no place here, just the simple fact that without people to enforce law and order, people die. Police are definitely a requirement to a functional society.
It is true that a few officers will be bad and/or poorly trained and will mess up in varying ways or act in deplorable ways.
Even if you come spring loaded with the spoon fed argument of "They only shoot black people and they are all racist bastards who need to be lynched and slaughtered like animals" then you my 'friend' are plain wrong.
The statistics by a number of places that will be listed below show that over 45% of all fatalities due to police action are enacted on white people with blacks and Hispanics making up 23 and 16 percent respectively.

The racial distribution of victims of US police lethal force is not proportionate to the racial distribution of the US population. Whites account for the largest racial group of deaths, but are under-represented, accounting for 45% of police killings (and 60% of the population). Blacks are over-represented, accounting for 24% of police killings (and 13% of the population). Hispanics are proportionately represented, accounting for 17% of police killings (and 18% of the population). Others (including Asian, Native American, and others) are under-represented, accounting for 4% of police killings (and 8% of the population). Source: Paull, J. (2019).
