Copy.
That's right. I'm telling you to steal! Don't photocopy: reproduce the art you like using the original media the artist used.
It's 100% fine to do this! Flattering, even. As long as it's for educational purposes only. You can't sell someone else's work. That's forgery and real, legal stealing. Very bad.
It's black and white about the distinction, by the way: if you gain by using someone else's work, you are stealing.
Copying from the masters is a time-honored tradition among artistic circles. If you wanted to paint well, you hiked to the Louvre and churned out your best effort at a Mona Lisa.
You learn a lot! How lines work, how pencils smear, how markers bleed - and how to turn it all to your advantage to make great art.
I shouldn't feel guilty, and neither should you! Clearly attribute where you got the idea from, don't charge anyone for it, and copy, copy, copy!
So, in review:
#1: Draw
#2: Copy

It's jsut the way you develop your own unqiue style.
Hell, Hunter S. Thompson used to copy the likes of Hemmingway. He'd just type out his work just to 'get a feel for how good writing works'.
Also, sometimes I work from reality. I've been drawing a lot of scenery lately, and on a strange whim I've been drawing clowns.
I should say, picklejuice I've been following your art for many years.. since I was a teen and thank you for the great stuff =3
i was wondering what happened to your "genie.. horse transformation" sketch. It's been my absolute favorite.
