Nobody has the “right” to serve in the Military. Nobody. What makes people think that the Military is an equal opportunity employer? They are very far from it.
The Military uses prejudice regularly and consistently to deny citizens from joining for being too old or too young, too fat or too skinny, too tall or too short. Citizens are denied for having flat feet, or for missing or additional fingers. Poor eyesight will disqualify you, as well as bad teeth.
Malnourished? Drug addiction? Bad back? Criminal history? Low IQ? Anxiety? Phobias? Hearing problems? Six arms? Hear voices in your head? Self-identify as a unicorn? Need a special access ramp for your wheelchair? Can’t run the required course in the required time? Can’t do the required number of pushups? Not really a “morning person” and refuse to get out of bed before noon? All can be reasons for denial.
The Military has one job, WAR. Anything else is a distraction and a liability. Did someone scream “That isn’t fair?” War is very unfair, there are no exceptions made for being special or challenged or socially wonderful.

Plenty of gay men and women fight just fine, sometimes better than the people next to them. Many armies around the world included women in their military. For quite a while ours still refused to do so. Glorified secretaries aren't military, just an excuse. When the people they exclude perform better than the people they let in, there is a problem.

the problem with ferreting out extremists... is who defines what is extremist? I remember a time when somply believing, or even being thought of as a communist was considered an extremist. Then you got into 'you are against the vietnam war, you must be a communist, therefore an extremist' so simply saying you wanted peace was considered extremist activity. Not that there weren't extremists who did that. But I've read about prominent members of the USA, senators, representatives, public figures who believed exactly that.

i can understand, approve and support vetting people and denying them to join based on physical requirements (example: missing limbs) and general fitness because at the end of the day a soldier has to do their job without being a liability to their fellow soldiers.

as for the vetting of extremists Trump supporters, well... back here in my home country of Germany, just a few short years ago (shortly before the beginning of the pandemic) our military had issues with actual neo nazis serving in the military and worshiping Hitler and the Third Reich in their free time so... you're free to call the vetting process of ideological extremists, both Trump supporters and otherwise, as an infringement on freedom of speech or whatever but as a person who witnessed political extremists hiding/infilitrating the military in my own country, trust me when i say: you really don't want to deal with this kind of bullshit.

Very true and I am a veteran. I know men who were gay but kept quiet about it, same as lesbians. They are good troops and I had no problem with their preferences, as long as it doesn't affect the mission, WAR. I also have no problem with females in combat roles as long as they can do the job.

Twenty years in uniform myself. I know that cliches are cliches for a reason. There were a lot of gay and bisexual men and women I knew, but they weren't the problem. Biggest drain on resources and readiness were always the single mothers--though it was a stoning offense to ever say that out loud because their protected status was absolute.

My girlfriend's mother was a single mother. She was working as a Navy Doc in a military hospital on Okinawa when my GF was born. She never married the father, but the Navy turned a blind eye because she was a damned fine thoracic surgeon. Then, in the 1990s, a lot of the Navy's 'middle-management' started retiring out and the new guard started leaning on her. She was up for promotion to Captain (!) when a newly-minted Admiral pooped all over her. They leaned on her and accused her of all sorts of BS, writing her up for imagined shortcomings until they finally forced her out. She worked her ass off to get where she was, child and all, and that wasn't good enough for some doody-head with his eyes on the Pentagon.

Whereas in my last five years in uniform I was surrounded by them. Multiple UCMJ offenses, chronic tardiness, uniforms that looked slept in, overtly avoiding responsibility and other such behaviors. They all did these things because they knew the sympathy card got them out of any trouble.

A completely different breed, apparently. The difference between honor and duty and entitlement. This is part of the reason that life in the Navy started to suck for single mothers in the 1990s -- a few ruined it for everyone.

I don't think anyone objects to getting out of Afghanistan. It is a war ten years overdue to end. But how its happened is a fucking travesty and all the more so because this was entirely unnecessary.
The Afghan pullout was always going to be a goatfuck, but good god nobody expected it to go south this hard or fast.

There was a deal. There was a plan. Kabul was in agreement. The northern warlords were in agreement. The taliban were in agreement, though it would take a fool to trust them as far as you could piss. Luckily that was what the ANA and warlords were for. Southern provinces were always going to be talib territory, but the north of the country could have lasted. At least for a time, until corruption and the ANA's criminal incompetence caught up with them.

Then biden reneged on the deals. Nearly all of them. Pushed the date forwards, killed the guarantees, re-wrote the agreements in a period of weeks. Didn't even take the 'terps or ANA officers closely affiliated with ISAF out of country like had been the plan. And in a stroke not only pissed off absolutely everyone in the sandpit, but sent a crystalline clear message to friend and foe alike; the US would ditch its commitments remaining in-country the moment they were no longer convenient to honour.

So when the taliban came rolling in, the ANA officers either fled or went into hiding. Without guidance, the enlisted surrendered or defected en-mass. The northern warlords didn't even try to hold their territory. Why would they? They could smell which way the wind was blowing. And at the end of it Kabul ended up an uncertain island for a few days until it too fell. Now the taliban are going door to door murdering the interpreters who would have been evac'd out months ago if the pedo in chief and his puppeteers hadn't felt a need to obsessively dismantle and re-shape every little thing the previous admin had put in place.

An army with more manpower than most militaries in fucking Europe disintegrated in under a week with barely a shot fired. That doesn't just fucking happen. Genghis Khan couldn't have fucking made that happen. But somehow through sheer, bloodyminded incompetence, the biden admin managed it. If they'd been enemies then right now biden would be counted one of the greatest generals in history.

I think if your organization happens to be diverse, that diversity is a strength and not a weakness. I think when you redesign an entire organization so that diversity is the main goal, then diversity - or anything you over-focus on beyond your core mission - becomes a negative.
