LET'S DO THIS

Here's what I did at AFF, if you want to know -- basically a con report!

Friday I was there for one hour, in the evening. I sat in the 'zoo'-type area with dragonmaw and caty and drew "rico the pizza cat". It was boring because everything was closed, so we left and went to the mall. Then we went home (I am currently living in Spokane, about 30 minutes away from where the hotel was.)

Saturday woke me up with an instant message from my brother saying that my father was in the hospital. I spent a long time on the phone with my mother about it, and didn't get to the convention area until around 11am. We went into the dealer's area, looked around, and saw there was plenty of space. dragonmaw beelined for assbutt and I followed him because I was looking forward to meeting her. I gave her a picture I drew for her a few nights before and looked at her shrinky-dinks for a few minutes while dragonmaw talked to her and thewhitefalcon. I wasn't feeling well so I wasn't very talkative but I tried to be conversational. I noticed turbinedivinity across the room, who I had talked to briefly online the night before, so I popped over to his table and said hello, and then I went to go register.

They didn't take debit, so dragonmaw went to get money out of the ATM. (He was holding the money for himself, me, and caty to register.) He was gone for about 10-15 minutes and I didn't want the con staff to get upset with us (even though there was nobody in line) so I ran out to the ATM to find him. He wasn't there, so I withdrew $200 and brought it back to the registration area to pay up. Shortly after, he returned with snacks and drinks from the gas station, but no money, citing that his card wasn't working. We were $20 short, so I went back to the ATM again to get out the rest of the money. I paid for everyone and then we went directly into the dealer's area. I'm sure I was visibly annoyed, because I'm unemployed and that was the last $200 in my bank account, plus I had run through the whole hotel to find him. I didn't really say anything, though. I just said "pay me back later if you want" and went to go do my thing.

I stayed in the dealer's area until 7pm. The first person I encountered was a big guy whose art supplies were confiscated by the canadian border patrol. He told the story and I got a kick out of it so I did a sketch of his character looking upset and holding an art bag while the border patrol yelled from off-camera "GIT ON YER KNEES, FURRY" or something like that. After that, dreamersdestiny came by, and we talked about dolphin furries and how cool they are (hee!). We got along well, and she bought a badge for her boyfriend aphinity from me before going on to do her con business. Next up was a quietish guy whose name I forget, but his character was a striped bear-cat. He was pretty straightforward, he asked for a sketch and I did one for him! I do remember that his only reference was an adult picture, and he seemed embarrassed, but it was funny so I didn't care. After that, one more guy with a cheetah character came over for a while, and I drew him a sketch too. I also can't remember his name. :x

At this point, some of caty's friends, atomsk813 and pandaparty came over and started talking to us. One of them noticed that I had The Apples In Stereo playing on my computer (I was using it as a slideshow) and he said he really liked them, so we started talking about music. After a few minutes, fluffybearcub came over, and we ended up somehow discussing transgender politics. That got a little heated, understandably, but it was a civil debate and nobody left with hurt feelings as far as I could tell. Though at one point, he noticed a picture I did for darkpawcamui on my slideshow and said something to the effect of "MOTHERFUCKER OWES ME TWO BAMBINOS", which was unintentionally hilarious and became my catchphrase for the rest of the night. They went after a while with Caty to go smoke a cigarette and look at the general happenings of the convention. I think at that point I told dragonmaw to go away too, because he was sitting behind the table not doing anything and distracting me when I was talking to customers. Somewhere between then and 7pm, I had one more badge commission from silvermink because he saw the sample I did of Soma and liked the way I did his hair. A fellow named Snowy who looked like the dead guy from Weekend At Bernie's thanks to his sunglasses and old man hat also popped up throughout the day and provide lots of entertainment, but I can't remember his FA name... but he really likes manuls.

Once the Dealer's area closed, everyone was hungry and apparently craving asian food, so caty, dragonmaw, and their seattlefurs friends atomsk813, pandaparty, and alleygator all headed out to the local Mongolian Grill. The food was amazingly good and our waitress was hilarious. She had the squeakiest asian-old-lady voice and she kept harassing Caty about not getting a second plate of food, calling her a lightweight. We were there for at least an hour. I was feeling generous and knew he didn't have much money, and since I had made about $40 at the con that day and he had good taste in music, I paid for atomsk813's dinner.

After eating, we decided to cruise the town for a while, hitting up our local Bubble Tea joint (delicious kiwi boba yesss) and then driving through the abandoned aluminum factory while listening to various twee things I had on my ipod. I was frustrated with dragonmaw over personal matters so I spent most of the time joking around with Caty's friends and talking about indie music dynamics. We somehow ended up in a parade, which was amazingly hilarious. We followed the parade around until we got to Value Village, which we decided to go peruse for fun junk. As soon as we walked in, we encountered a WALL of diapers, disintegrated into a heap of laughter over them, and bought a pack to give to fluffybearcub as a joke (since that motherfucker owes him two bambinos). At some point I also found an amazing old tape deck / boombox for $5, so I bought it to use at my dealer's table the next day.

We tired of driving around after that, so we headed back to the convention space, since the seattlefurs were staying there. caty and I went into the hotel with them with intentions of finding a party, but after wandering around for a while, I started feeling really tired and oversocialized, so we went home for the evening. I was exhausted and frustrated with dragonmaw, so I went straight to bed. I think I may have talked to meshgearral online about my frustrations for a while first.

Sunday started off late. I woke up with a splitting headache (even without partying! ha!) and my computer being near-bricked. Somehow over the course of Saturday, half of the DLLs were deleted, and I couldn't connect to any Windows services. (For example, if I tried to bring up Network Sharing Center to get online, the computer would just freeze and crash.) After trying and failing to fix it for about an hour, caty got a text message from atomsk813 saying he had left his laptop in our car and he needed it back so his group could leave the convention ASAP. I skipped my shower (EW AUGH i showered twice as long later to scrub off the filth) and hurriedly got dressed and bolted out the door with all my supplies.

We stopped at Kinko's on the way to the hotel and I laminated and cut out aphinity and silvermink's badges (and Soma's, but he's obviously not at the convention because he's in grody old wisconsin) and then hit walmart for some orange juice and goldfish. We got to the con and atomsk813 was pretty much waiting at the door, so I handed off his laptop, said goodbye, and headed into the Dealer's area. Pretty soon after that, a local furry and comic nerd racoonhero came and talked to me for a long time. He gave me a copy of Furrlough with A MANUL ON THE COVER!!! This was one of the highlights of my convention, rofl. I drew him a sketch of his character wrapped up in pretty pink ribbons and he went off to talk to dragonmaw about Deadpool and Watchmen and stuff. When they were done, dragonmaw went off to do things with assbutt and whoever else they were with, but I stayed to draw more.

Around the same time racoonhero showed up, so did turbinedivinity, and we had a HUGE conversation about pretty much every Postfurry social dynamic of the past ten years, hahaha. We talked about Yerf and feuds between some of our friends, "where are they now", and a bunch of other junk. I looked through his sketchbook and was filled with insta-happy because there was art from so many of my friends and inspirations from a looong time ago. He put me up to the challenge of adding a piece to it and I took him on. He left his book with me and went to go pack up his things, and I worked on the picture for the rest of the time I was there - Until about 3pm. After a while I figured I should vacate the Dealer's area, since there were only two more people in there, so I moved out into the hallway. I was feeling kind of lonely and tired, so I put my headphones on and watched a couple of episodes of Dog Bites Man and ate lunch (more orange juice and goldfish).

I talked for a while to lordpico, a local friend of the family, and then drew a doodle for eaglebird. Eventually my solitude was broken by turbinedivinity and oCe coming back, and we chilled for a long time just talking about fun junk like old arcade machines, jobs we've had, and places we've lived. Another highlight of my con, for sure, just sitting around and chatting/commiserating with normal folks. At some point Turbine snuck in some beer, which he poured into a teacup and sipped from. It was high class. B)

At 5pm dragonmaw came back and we went home, and.. that's when he con ended, I guess! So there's my report, as detailed as my memory can possibly hold, on what exactly I did and who precisely I talked to during the entire convention. If anyone is telling you stories about anything I did at AFF, take it with a grain of salt. I guess there was a lot of gossip being spread at one of the parties or something, I have no idea. Old grudges between people I don't even know got reignited over the weekend and I guess because I was there people want to drag me down with them, out of spite or whatever else. But hey, that's furries. The smaller the convention, the more they have to make up for it to seem interesting! :X

Overall I suppose I had fun, but I think in my choice between the cons that happened on this weekend (I'd typically be attending Morphicon), I'd have to go with the Ohio-based one. Not because of the location or anything, but more because AFF overall was very unorganized and generally seemed to have a cliquish atmosphere. That might just have to do with all the stress I was dealing with (father in the hospital, in an unfamiliar place, east coast kid on the west coast, dealing with relationship problems, not having my own car, etc) but oh well. It was an experience!

so yeah my laptop (my only computer) is completely fried for an unknown reason -- at first I thought I was just having internet issues, but it's a lot worse. I'm in the process of a total backup/reformat, i have no internet access. I borrowed a friend's computer to post this. good end to a mediocre convention, eh?

my cellphone is also bricked, so I'm pretty much completely offline until I can fix this shit.

For anyone going to AFF, I'm probably only going to be offering sketchbook stuff, pencil/ink pictures, and things of that nature. I probably won't be able to do any color (can't get markers in time).

So.. gimme a hand? I'd really appreciate it, especially if you've been watching me for a long time. :)


(incidentally, for anyone that has pending Real Media commissions with me, that's why it's taking so long -- 90% of my markers got destroyed in the drive from WI to PA in February. Guess I should have kept them in the cab of the truck instead of in the back during a snowstorm. :x All of them WILL be done by AC, for sure. After AFF I plan to buy a whole new set of markers.)

I would ALSO really love to see some people draw Poco das CMYK colliephin fluffdroid, (or techno!) either interacting with your character, or one of mine. (G-rated only please.) For my half of these I would want to be able to basically go crazy and draw whatever, like, just throw me a character sheet.

This stuff would be done in-between commissions, so there might be a little bit of a wait, but not forever.

I can do probably 3 or 4 picture trades, and I'll gladly trade with anyone. No guarantees as to whether you get a sketch or a tiny cute pic or whatever since it's just for practice. You can do your half after I do mine if you want to match the style. I guarantee you'll get something nice though -- I just want to be able to mess around with techniques and such. For the icons, I'd like to see an example of your work first cause I want to be able to use it for a long time :)

a few hours before leaving I got hit with a horrible migraine, and then about an hour before it was time to go, I came down with the absolute worst panic attack I've had in at -least- the past 5 years. I couldn't see straight and I threw up and I still can't stop shaking. I just can't handle it. I really was not ready to travel out here, let alone to a convention in a new city. I'm just going to stay in Spokane with maw's parents and try to chill out.

There's still a slight chance I might make it out there before I leave Washington. We'll see if my issues improve in the next week or so.

Well, I was really productive over the past two days. I had sketches and some inks done for lots of people. My father unplugged my computer without asking while I was asleep and I lost all progress on the 4 commissions I was working on. These were for LaraTheLabRat and Ryone specifically; I also lost a couple of icons and 14 text files of notes and ideas, and half of a new song.

I'm also going through a "breakup", lost my best friend for the Nth time, and am having an existential meltdown.

I really don't know what to do. Sorry guys.

Oh, and I'm back in Pittsburgh. (Obviously.)

Will get back to work as best I can, but everything is coming out crap right now, I guess because it's hard to make Happy Art when you feel like like a rejected pile of shit. </whine>

There's nothing like finding someone you thought was really cool on FA, being excited to see more of their stuff, attempting to leave them a nice, well thought out Shout... and finding out that you're blocked from their page.

It makes me lol that the only people I've created a rift with on FA appear to be some of the same clan that are my favorite internet people elsewhere (LJ, the rare occasional foray into MUCKing many moons ago, etc).

In other news, things are like a rollercoaster here in Colorado. Nothing that I can write about yet. Personal life currently feels like it's in one of those terrible vibrating paint mixer machines. If you dipped the tester stick into my brain it'd be that nasty Breen muck when you blend 40 leftover cans like in that one episide of Rocko's Modern Life.

oh man, i didn't realize so many people would respond D: Sorry!

Anyway, I got really sick and more dehydrated than I've ever been in my life. I was puking pure acid and could barely move around without getting so dizzy I couldn't see. I'm still not 100% better, but they pumped me full of liquid with a delicious IV (and we thought, man, why don't they just sell home IV units for chronically dehydrated people like me? it would be a major help) full of sugarwater and anti-nausea medication. I'm still feeling kind of blah, but definitely much more functional and awake... just weak. The altitude isn't helping, 'cause it's been making me dizzy too, but I'll get over that. In the meantime, if I can just keep the nausea away, I'll be alright. I'm downing as much gatorade as possible, since I haven't had an appetite in almost a week and eating makes me feel really sick.

But anyway, there's the update!

In other news, Rask and I got a REALLY AWESOME new concept for an "alternative painting" project that involves glass and distortion, and another idea for a simple browser-based game. Gonna go out to the art store and pick up some supplies and see if I can't get a painting off the ground while I'm out here, since working on commissions is difficult at the moment because looking at the computer for too long is making me dizzy. That'll be gone in a couple days though.

It's my first big flight and I'm pretty scared about the whole thing, but I think it's going to be a much-needed couple weeks of genuine mushy bff sleepover party time. WE'RE GONNA STAY UP ALL NIGHT AND TALK ABOUT BOYS AND WATCH MOVIES AND GET OUR HAIR DID AND GO SHOPPING haha we are total faggots :( but yeah, a much needed chillax vacation that has the added bonus of seeing how well we can tolerate each other for a long period of time. ~8+ years talking online < 2 weeks irl, for srs. Everyone pray that we don't kill each other.

hurgh, my father is having issues with setting up a new router and internet connection. I've been able to get online ONCE (now) in the past dayish, and even then I can't load any images for some reason...?? It's moving at like 2kps and I can't even stay connected to like IRC or really really simple non-connection-stressing things, let alone my references and such. Anyway, gonna be slow for the next couple days. I'm working on something really big and really honing my skills on a full digital piece involving ROBOT GUTS in the meantime; it's turning out badass, and will hopefully get me ready for the couple of sweet bigger commissions in the pipeline. Hopefully this will be fixed over the next couple days, at any rate... Thanks for being patient. x_x

I installed it, downloaded the current drivers, rebooted, and everything else... and it isn't working right. it works, sort of, but the pen is jerky and it seems like it lags when i try to draw a line. Like it takes a second for it to realize that I'm touching the pad. It's making it impossible to draw.

It's a Wacom Graphire2 (steel blue if that matters)
I'm using Windows Vista.

Nothing I've googled has helped, nothing on Wacom's site has helped. I'm just trying to draw in MSpaint at this point. Not worried about pressure sensitivity or anything. Halp?

I was holding off on asking the "defining image" question that's been floating around til I got here, so I'd be able to respond intelligently. SO.

1. What image in my gallery (or elsewhere, if you know me outside FA) do you think captures my 'style' best?

2. What do you think of when you think of me? Like, a few words that you would use to describe me to a friend or whatever?

I AM CURIOUS! and feeling kinda in need of some narcissism i guess, haha, I need a little 'ego boost' if you will... I've been really down on myself especially regarding drawing lately and could use some encouragement/inspiration. :V

i'm turning off all adult images for a while. i'm tired of bumping into stuff that turns my stomach. it's not worth it for seeing the tasteful nudes/non disgusting stuff and such for me at this point when it seems like every other person i watch has suddenly gone on a spree for shit that sends me into panic attacks (if you really need more info about this, note me). it's not their fault obviously, so all i can do is turn on the filter and wait til i chill out. if there's something i absolutely have to see, note me or something.

Still only have MSpaint to work with so commissions are on hold. I'll be back in Pittsburgh on JANUARY 18TH and will be working day-in day-out on my backlog then. (For those not in the know, I'm in the middle of moving, and all my art supplies and scanner and such are packed up and on their way to my old house so they'll be there when I arrive.)

Like I said before, I'll make a big flashing announcement when I'm back in town. You'll also notice when I am because SUDDEN FLOOD OF COMMISSIONS.

hey all. sorry for the lack of activity, my cable and such got shut off.

I am MOVING BACK TO PITTSBURGH PA this month, at an unknown date. (within the next 3 weeks)

because i have to pack all my stuff up to prepare for a 15 hour drive, this means I won't be able to work on anything aside from junk in mspaint and maybe a sketch here and there.

I had a scare a few days ago and thought I had 24 hours to pack up and get out -- that didn't happen, I'm still here. Sorry to anyone i freaked out at during that time.

Nevertheless my life is pretty turbulent right now, but even so, YOUR ART IS MY FULL TIME JOB. So all my commissions in queue, do not fear. I just can't work on stuff while packed up, is all. When i get back into the city I'll be working again full time. :)

IMPORTANT TO NOTE is something I've been mulling around for a while-- you may have noticed, but I am officially no longer open to any ADULT commissions, and that will continue to be in effect while in Pittsburgh, not only for my own sanity and dignity, but for my mother's (hi mom), as I'm staying with her for the next 3 months.

Things that toe the line like artistic/tasteful nudity and stuff that doesn't outright feature butt ass naked furry action will be taken on a case-by-case basis. This might not be forever, but it's the way it has to be for now. I'm not that into drawing furry porn, honestly. I'm just here for the toony "can walk around without pants on" stuff, 99% of the time.
