A couple of weeks ago I posted a journal for a new commission theme I thought up: 50 First Dates

When I commission artists, I usually give them a list of options to choose from. That journal is #1 on that list, most times. If the artist chooses it, they'll pick a girl referenced in the comments, and draw her with Rooth in a first-date scenario. I cover the bill (though I accept help if you offer it), and we get a cute pic. :) And because it's a first date, it'll never be adult themed, so if you have reservations about participating because of that possibility, it isn't.

There's a decent list there, but already a few artists have chosen the option and started picking off volunteers. Each character can only be chosen once (without serious convincing), and so the selection pool is already dwindling a bit.

I have a new character who was inspired by this drawing from long ago, by fudchan, which stands the test of time as one of her best pieces (her words!). She recently did another piece for me, seen here, and reprised the character for a sequel. For some reason, I was really enchanted by this character, as was fudchan, so I got her a ref sheet, and added her to the lineup.

When I posted her ref sheet, I solicited for names, and was going to stop taking names and do a choosing kinda thing 4 days later. Which I never did, because I'm a major slacker.

But that's fixed now!

Another commission series idea, particularly for those artists who don't like my usual macro/growy nonsense:

50 Furst Dates

Concept: Draw a "first date" scene between Rooth'ragon [ feral ref or anthro ref ] or Rooth'roo [ feral ref or anthro ref ] and any other character, artist's choice from the volunteers below! You may instead choose one of your own, a fan character, or even make it a YCH.

Followers, if you comment below with a ref to your character and give express permission for the artist to to include you, any artist who takes this option might choose you! Sharing the cost is not necessary! (but appreciated, and may help in the case of a particularly indecisive artist).

Constraints: Artistic freedom on setting, characters, and most other aspects, save for the following:
* Gender: female date only. Rooth is hetero (sorry guys!). Rooth'ragon is unlikely to date a switch, if he knows they're a switch, on account of a related betrayal long ago. Rooth'roo probably wouldn't care.
* Once: while a couple can visit several settings over the course of a First Date, to encourage diversity I will discourage repeat commissions with the same character pairing. But it's not entirely forbidden; a particularly good idea can sway me from this.
* Rating: strongly suggest G-PG. Rooth'ragon is a romantic gentleman, and Rooth'roo is a naive goofball, so R is too far for a first date. If the girl is particularly lascivious and you want to push the edge, talk to me first: I might not repost it if it's too edgy, or if it's super-edgy, I might require you not to post it, or just reject it completely.

It seems the voting box is effectively being 'stuffed' by a single group of devout followers of John C Wright and Theodore Beale. If even half of what this article says is true, these guys are the most homophobic, islamaphobic, and no-doubt furry-phobic authors I've ever heard of. And it seems they've swept the nominations this year thanks to their White Knights.

I need to read a few more articles on this fiasco before I seriously buy into the whole story, but on the face of it, it's a pathetic example of democracy in action, and an insult to previous winners, one of whom I sorta know and who will likely have a very interesting and amusing journal about it in a week or two: Ursula Vernon.

Due to a recent timing miracle at work known colloquially in the industry as a "bath tub", I've been able to arrange a vacation! Unpaid, which is a bummer but also a blessing, since I don't have much vacation time this year. Unpaid leave is very rarely granted at my company, so on the whole, I consider myself fortunate.

So, barring a "recall", I'll be joining a few friends on a little tour of Europe! Sadly, I won't be able to hang for the whole ride, and I'm not exactly sure just how much road traveling we'll do. Hi folks! We had another great turnout for RAAM -- Rooth Appreciates Artists Month. A big huge thank you to everyone who participated! You've helped to create a great resource of "artists' favorite artists", and exposed me and hopefully many others to a fantastic assortment of talent, including yourselves! So thanks for that. :)

For those who did enter, we enter step 2 of the contest: I've posted a list of everyone who entered, with a number indicating how many tickets the rules say you should get (automatic 1 if you qualify, +2 if I commissioned you, +1 if you entered early (before I sent out emails to everyone))

P I T C H :: Why I'm doing this


P S A First of all, I want to draw attention to the rules at Anthrocon's 2015 Artists' Alley. I'll let that page speak for itself, but if you haven't been to AC's Alley in a couple years, a lot has changed. Go read the site. :)

Additionally, I want to draw attention to an amazing artist resource my roomie and I discovered at an Denver Artists' Salon seminar. It's called Art Pact. The front page says it best:
PACT is a tool to help freelance fantasy, sci-fi, comic book and other illustrators negotiate a better living for themselves.
It has a wealth of resources, including template contracts, tips for getting pro gigs, articles explaining copyright and publishing and all sorts of stuff, and a huge chunk of it is free to use. It's run by some guys with a lot of experience in the field who are giving back to the artist community to try to raise all artists up.

So go check out ArtPact.com!

And with that PSA out of the way, on to the real reason I'm doing this:

B E C A U S E . . . January is now the unofficial month for me showing my appreciation for the artists in the community (aside from the usual thing, in the form of commissions) (and I procrastinated too long this year; so this year it's March *grin*). January 2015 marks the end of my 24th year in this fandom, and the 4th annual RAAM!

You artists contribute so much to the community, beyond just what you do to make a buck. There's a vim to your vibe that I think is the engine for this fandom. I love that about you. There's this ripple effect I see echoing from what you do, from how you act and feel in your posts, from the art you draw, the stuff you craft, and the cheer you bring to each customer and friend with your creations.

The world needs more of that. The world needs more of YOU.

Throughout 2014, you've put up with all sorts of stress and change and drama and annoyances. Some more than others. Some A LOT more than others. Y'know that one customer who constantly asks for more free changes? Y'know that one dude who was all pissy about how you drew too many toes on his 8-limbed character who is NOT a spider? Y'know that one gal who complained 'cause you didn't deliver the art on time, even though she didn't give you a deadline? Y'know how FC2014 was kind of a low-profit con for you? Y'know how the customs agent at the border TOOK ALL YOUR SHIT? (I'm looking at you, maxblackrabbit, and reusing that from 2013's RAAM, because damn!).

Yeah, you've put up with all sorts of grief. Well, here's a little something to balance that. It's after the holidays, y'all have gotten your gifts. Now it's time for one more. =)

I use random.org, per this completely indisputably transparent above-board corruption-free method. It's repeatable, drama-free, and 100% fair. Go read up on it if you care. ;) It's the same method I use for Anthrocon's Artists' Alley raffle, and the same method I used last year.

This journal is to explain my silly image sequence idea to artists I have commissioned. I've made this pitch several times and it'll be easier if I just link folks to this journal. ;) If you don't find amusement with silly growth scenes, or are not an artist I am commissioning, you can safely skip this.

Simple story: Rooth'roo hops up to a coffee shop, orders some stuff, and due to some mysterious influence (the donut? the coffee? a blowdart?), he starts growing uncontrollably, indefinitely.

The commission: Draw one scene of your choice at any point along that sequence. It starts with him hopping up to the coffee shop (or some time before that), and ends with him at some ridiculous cosmic size that's incomprehensible (or some time after that).

Some Artistic Freedom: You (the artist) would get to pick the setting, the scale, the props or background, any cameos or side characters, .. all that. If you choose a scene in the timeline close to one of the other scenes already rendered, try to maintain some consistency.

A bit more explanation

Think of it as a feature-length movie in your head, that starts with Rooth'roo contemplating going out to that shop for coffee and noms, and ends with him as big as the universe. Maybe it's a very long movie, where he takes years before he's even as big as a skyscraper and has to go through periods of time where his growth has stopped and he's trying to get his normal life back somehow ... or maybe it's pretty quick, and by sunset he's stomping entire cities flat out of frustration, or confusion, or by complete accident ... but in any case, your mission is to pick any frame of that movie in your head, any scene throughout the entire movie that you want, and draw what you see.

This Kickstarter is to back an EPIC art project. A bunch of my favorite artists are raising money to fund a trip to Africa where they will be creating an incredible collection of animal artwork as they tour the Botswana countryside, and a dip into Zimbabwe for one of my favorite vistas on earth, Victoria Falls (which has featured in a couple of Rooth commissions). The trip will be captured in a brilliantly designed professional art book with art from all the artists on the trip!

I always love traveling, myself, and Africa's been a dream destination for me. I can't go with them, but we CAN back them and share in the experience!

This hasn't happened in like 8 years of being on here. Since the first day, really.

I had 377 comments uncleared. Things I had queued up to comment on later, and never did. That had built up over so much time, it no longer had any meaning.

Time to start fresh.

And on that note, also time to redo the ol' resolution thing. And recap how I did with last year's resolutions (not great).

That ... is a story for another time, though.

Had a very odd Godzilla dream this morning. I was in a city, at the observation floor atop some skyscraper. Everyone was pressed to the glass taking pictures of a Godzilla-sized Godzilla climbing a nearby building that was under construction. But it wasn't Godzilla itself, it was a fully articulated model. A film crew was apparently doing experimental shots, and the engineers driving the model (some of whom were inside the model) were getting a feel for how it worked.

Godzilla was clumsy at first, as climbing buildings took coordination with the people embedded in each claw and foot -- they were the ones actually grabbing onto scaffolding and beams and such, and once they had a grip, they'd shout to the other hand or foot, "Got it! Go go go go!". Even from my distant vantage, I could somehow see the guy in the claw reaching out for the building, and the giant Godzilla claw would move toward it, and the little guy would grab on. How normal-sized people were keeping a strong enough grip to keep the giant Godzilla model up is beyond me -- he must've been made of balsa wood or something. O_O;

Anyhow, at some point he leapt from the building (this is a very articulate model!), and grabbed on to our building at a lower floor, and started climbing. I just had to get some pictures, but I didn't have my cell phone. I left it in my backpack. It's then I realized I had misplaced my backpack. I'd also misplaced my shoes, and the soles of my socks (but just the soles -- the rest of the sock was intact and somehow still hugging my foot). So I scrambled to go looking for them, and I'd fine one, and lose another.

In the course of the scramble, model-Godzilla climbed up to be eye-level with the observation deck, so I went back to check it out. He was mock-eating some bystander (which is interesting, because there was no outdoor observation deck, there were just huge sealed windows, so how did he grab someone?), and making mouth motions as an actor practicing for a verbally tricky scene might do. G started climbing over our building, and at this point I had my backpack I think, so I took it off to fetch out my cell phone, and by the time I looked up again, he was gone. Gone? Where the heck does something that big disappear to? Oh... maybe he fell.... no? Maybe he jumped to another building. Dang.

The rest of the dream is just me discovering the rest of the floor of this building, encountering open-walled restaurants right next to open-walled bedrooms. I awoke when I felt a poking at my head, and turned to find someone I recognized pointing at something beyond me and I was in the way of their pointing. I moved out of the way, and woke up.
