The day brought long, toilsome and tedious work. Maintaining the light was much more complicated than I had thought it could be. Abe Livingston, the old keeper here at Oaks Neck, was patient enough in teaching, but he had a chilly and distant way about him. I know he doesn't really want me here - he made it abundantly clear to Father Molloy that he had no need for an extra hand that would just be getting in his way - but I really hope that can change with time. This lighthouse is the closest thing I've had to a home since I left Manchester after that disaster at the mill. I got my first real spark of hope this evening, when Abe had me light the wicks for the lantern. I got it right the first try. He didn't say anything, but I think I might have seen him smile over my success. I'll take the small victories at this point.
