If this piece sounds a bit darker than the other movements in this series, it's because I wanted to try something a little different. I felt like the Redwallers' first real encounter with Cluny, in which he delivers an ultimatum for their surrender, needed to be dark, foreboding, and a little chaotic. My aim was to use the music to create the series of images of the unsettled night, the angry knocking at the door, the timid Redwallers' hesitation, the sweeping in of Cluny, the reading of terms, Matthias tearing them up, and Constance driving Cluny out. This piece isn't what I would call "pretty", compared with the rest of the series, but overall I am pleased with how it turned out.
