screen tones are a dieing art

Is it really? How so?

Because of things like Photoshop. Screentones started going out of style back in the late 90's. At the time, I asked my graphic arts instructor about them in college, and she said that it was rarely used (in that professon) anymore. I never even saw it sold anywhere where I live.

Oh - I might have made a mistake here, is the word "screen tones" only used for physical stuff? What is the word for the digital ones then? Cause those ones aren't certainly dying anytime soon...

That's pretty much what I was talking about: the physical type, (also called "zip tone").

Okay, but I didn't take  sailoranna's comment "screen tones are a dieing art" for the physical support only, I thought it was generally speaking - and as far as I know, the digital version is on the contrary still florishing.

That's indeed a fact the physical support is on the decline, the same for mot stuff that can be done with a computer. I don't believe for example there are many companies selling and using celluloïds nowadays... But what I call "the art of" is the way to use them, independantly from the support, so in this matter of view the art is not dying, it's just switching from a media to another, with of course the necessary adaptation in handling it.

well for both really, I mean really the most who use it is manga publications, alot fo western comics dont use it much anymore. also to know what grade of what to use where is also something that isnt know about either. You dont see it too often,

Without any doubt you know better than me what's going on in the US comics market - although we are since a couple decades almost up to date thanks to numerous comics shops here (I'm speaking about France of course, don't really know what's up in the rest of Europa), our vision of what had been going on before is relatively scarce to say the least. So I completely trust you on that matter for your part of the Atlantic.

Here in Europa, until recently screentones have never been a thing, because almost all our Bandes Dessinées have historically been in colors, and screentones usually are here to act as colors.

Now, something strange is happening. You see, since France is the second country in the world in manga consumption, I can tell you a lot about what's going on in Japan, and the science of screentones is not going to fade out anytime soon back there. And because of this enthusiasm in France, many here have learnt to use those! Oh, it's not widespread either, but the screentone industry had a small boom and as far as I know, it is now living at a low but regular and steady pace. I think the art of screentones is still going to have its fanbase here.....

well good, I do love the way it looks. Always wanted to use it, but never got the time to set it up and byt he time I tryed to use the real stuff couldnt find it. Keep at it.

I can find some for you if you wanna try oneday, I know several shops around in Paris selling those! ^^

Don't know really how much time it cost me, I first had to check how to create my own screentones, with trials and errors since it's never as simple as the tutorials say, then begin, making errors and correcting, finding it needs some more, doing even more trials and erros, and so on..... All I know is the day I posted it I went to bed at 4:30 am while I began far before midnight, and that was the second day I worked on it so.... I'd say something like between 6 and 8 hours maybe?

Dang! Wow! Can Borrow some of your determination and will power!! It really you hard work to learn it! I need to work harder !!! Keep up the Fantastic work my friend! Time o hit the books and the coffee!!!

Ha ha ha, I think that's less will power than impatience to finally get rid of it!!
