Sadly, many government issued project contracts require a minority at different levels in a company to qualify for a government job bid. It doesn't matter their skill or experience or aptitude, only that they fill a check box on an application.

You'll see this common practice in construction, airport businesses, facilities, etc.

No, it isn't fair to anyone involved, but it is how these contracts often work.

To my knowledge, such requirements in work and elsewhere call for people of at least equal qualification. It's not preferring unqualified people. It wouldn't make sense otherwise.

The object is to try to make steps towards evening out our long history of institutional racism and discrimination, not to put unqualified people into jobs. That would be self defeating. It's not like there's an actual shortage of qualified minorities.

To get a contract to operate a restaurant at an airport, for example, it is not unusual at all to have a requirement to be a minority ethnic woman owned company. The airport would have a requirement to have x% minority owned businesses to meet quota, and would find themselves with people that have never worked or owned an appropriate business, being incapable of providing the service effectively due to no experience or training. This is fairly common in airports, Construction, transportation, really anywhere such government quotas are pushed.

It all nice and good to think everything is being done equally, but that isn't reality. The best person for the job is frequently overlooked in favor of check boxes on a form.

Real world example: White House Press Secretary Jean-Pierre. Her qualifications for the job were race and gender, not background, training, or experience. And then results are very apparent.

You may well be aware of some situations or incidents that I'm not, but as far as the ones I'm familiar with that is definitely not the case. Around here, at least, there seem to be plenty of qualified minority candidates who are given opportunities for such things.

This is unfortunately not the case in my area, resulting in projects having to be redone at great taxpayer expense... by additional unqualified people. Governments are very poor at managing anything.

No, there is little or nothing to misunderstand about that statement. They were trying to address that no matter how famous or wealthy a woman of color is, she will never be as privileged as a white man even if he is homeless and destitute. This is factually wrong on every level. Now if they had use another, more general example, or perhaps used a specific example that was actually true, then I'd have no problem with it, but I'm pretty sure that a homeless white man would not be able to get away with anything Oprah could. Money talks, and Oprah has a shit load of it. Some folks either don't think before talking, or are just too ready to speak on subjects they haven't really studied or don't understand. It's also all too easy for a lot of people to just dig their heels in as opposed to really listening to and thinking about what others say.

Uhhh... Most of the factories ARE in the poorer areas. That's one of the reasons that minorities and poor people often have health problems.

Also, locating a factory in a poorer area doesn't necessarily mean any benefit to the people who live there.

What is the factory making? How many people will it employ? Will any of those people be from the community? If so, will the working conditions be good? Will it maybe be a collective? Will the pay be good? Will the workers have an opportunity to rise within the company? There are an awful lot of factors that might make it a good thing or not.

Everybody deserves a rewarding job that pays well. A good start towards this would be to rebalance the wealth that has steadily concentrated upwards for the last half a century or more.

This is an incredibly complicated thing to do, and factories are but one small piece of it, and how they're administrated and run is as well.

I don't think so. Our society can clearly afford to take care of everyone. We're currently the most wealthy empire in the history of the planet, and we provide less for the public benefit than many countries with much more modest means.

Wealth has been steadily concentrated upwards over the last half century and more, to a literal handful of superbillionaires. A fair rebalancing of this wealth as well as not spending close half of our treasure on weapons, war, and aggression would provide a high quality of life for everyone, with those few whose exorbitant fortunes would be somewhat reduced barely noticing it. We need to actually care for and about EVERYBODY. We would all benefit from this. Just think of the increased productivity from the full employment and health of everyone, if you'd like a particularly capitalist example. And I think the moral rewards would be even greater.

Or Canada. My old Toyota RAV4 was actually built in Tokyo (the VIN gives the plant ID). Better built and painted than the U.S. made ones. My brother's Ford pickups both came from Canada.

That might be true for Canada, but I've heard the Mexico made vehicles tend to be lower quality. I guess it depends on the vehicle design slash blueprint and the company behind it too. Toyota tends to be a high quality affordable option.

I have never heard good things about cars made in Mexico or in most of South America (Argentina, Brazil). Henry Ford never learned his lesson back almost a century ago, but that was an ill-conceived social experiment as much as it was a rubber factory.

Pretty much. But social justice radicals cannot look past the fact equity (equal outcomes for those unware) isn't ever going to be a thing. Its the language they use today to justify racial discrimination, usually against whites and Asians, to give BIPOC opportunities instead of selecting people based on merit. When a member of their preferred minority class doesn't receive it then they cry oppression.

It's pretty much all they can do at this point and why I left their party. They have unrealistic expectations of reality as is. Toxic positivity is what is basically. It's partly why they tend to hate black and hispanic conservatives. They don't kowtow to the narrative they are an oppressed class today and they liken every conservative area as being the equivalent of the deep south here in the US. Hardly the case at all.

Being rich in the US isn't something just anyone is going to attain. Having the skills to even get an opportunity to be a multimillionaire is hard as is but also requires the skill to retain it. Most people just aren't capable where in other cases opportunities are simply finite.

So some excellent players just end having to find something else to do and because they likely put their efforts into getting recruited failed to build on a secondary skillset of equal value. Hell do a trade... those people often make 6 figures soon after graduation. Unions were a good thing. Raising the levels of safety/pay for us everyday blue-collar workers is worth acknowledging. Then they went sour, and are now the bastion of 'Seniority Clauses' which protect workers who don't produce, don't earn the pay they're getting, and have zero accountability for any of it (ie, see what's happened with our 'Public School' systems, across the nation, and the abysmal performance/test scores that have resulted from it).

Take every industry, including military/space (I was living in Sacramento, CA, when they shuttered THREE major bases within a sixty mile area, devastating the local towns/city due to the sudden loss of business/revenue, and even NASA/Aerojet was hamstrung.).
While this did begin opening the doors to the very wealthy private Citizen/Businessman/person and foreign nations, that hardly helped the hundreds of thousands of American Citizens with the loss of their jobs.
American Businesses began their mass exodus (Again, notably starting in the 70's/80's), abandoning America and opening up in foreign countries. The same countries that do NOT have Unions, and who pay a wage/income that is mere pennies above actual 'Slavery'.
Said Companies and those who own/ran/run them raked-in the $$$, while the core of American Business was gutted, and we now see cities and suburbs that look like something out of an apocalyptic horror movie, but IRL.

Now we're living the results of this 'Virus of mysterious origins' and the two year shut-down of our economy, while simultaneously realizing the utter lack of domestic manufacturing for even the most basic of commodities/products.

I have little pity for the ultra wealthy, but I will grant them this- THEY know how to make $$$ and wield it. I've just been a 'Grunt' all my life. Blue Collar and not ashamed of it. I also realize my ignorance(s) about 'Wall Street/Big Business/Foreign and Domestic policies', but have to accept that with all the red tape America and its Judiciary/Legal System/Unions covet, trying to start any business these days is almost doomed to failure (just look at the percentages of small businesses that don't make it, for starters).

I would LOVE to see the wealthy American Businesses/Owners invest their $$$ into starting domestic manufacturing, and reducing our reliance on foreign products, but there's a valid reason why they don't.
