My Influences and Inspirations
After much trial and error, recently as of this art piece, I think I have finally reached a point in my art style where i'm starting to be happy with the results! Am I there yet? Not quite yet, but I feel like I have a very good foundation for what it will become. That being said, I wanted to make a list for anyone who may be curious about the artists i've been most influenced and inspired by. Although these handful of amazing artists are by far the most prominent, there are certainly many other artists I have reached out to over the years, as well as dozens of others in the community who have helped give me advice, encouraged me to try new things, and to motivate and push me forward, but I cannot possibly list them all. Likewise, don't think ill ever be able to thank everyone enough for their help, and wherever I end up, I will never forget where i've come from.
The first one for sure to note is the wonderful Wyla! Wyla is where I primarily got started in asking for many pieces of advice in the beginning of my journey, but as I started to explore and learn other methods from other artists, I have slowly drifted away. I will certainly never forget how she helped offer me the foundation for what my art has become and how it will be in the future. However, I have always been a massive fan of her linework, and she kindly gave me her own brush some time ago. It's something I still follow and definitely intend to keep as a core piece of my style for the foreseeable future.
I don't know if there is any artist I can thank more than Nix. I made a journal praising her for how much she has helped me in my art journey if you'd like to know more, but I tune into streams all the time, and I have learned so much about anatomy just by watching her process! She has not only offered advice, but straight up giving me many visual demonstrations too. Also asked as a passing joking one day, to which she graciously gave me her shading brush, which I have tweaked for my own use. Nix is for sure a pillar of my art journey.
When I first saw Jagzcat's art, I was stunned and found her lineless style captivating! She was the first artist I started watching on Picarto regularly and I think she is who has shaped my style the most. I tried a few things in terms of coloring before, trying to make fur look like fur, and I have very much tried to mimic what she does. She has also been a massive influence for learning backgrounds! I have ripped apart and studied her .psd files, which have served as amazing learning material in general, but they've been a massive help in understanding how to compile backgrounds. Lastly, she also served as a foundation for learning shading, but like with Wyla, i've kind of transitioned.
I could probably write a journal on Iskra alone as well. Although I was mostly influenced by her older style, this lovely gal has constantly been a source of learning and inspiration, namely with her style of shading. Iskra is the first artist I eve messaged for advice and one of the first I pledged to on Patreon, studying her .psd files, like with Jagz. She's always been a joy to chat with and is someone i'm happy to call a friend. Iskra has always offered feedback, and although her art hasn't influenced my style directly, she has been a massive help and influence in my art journey.
When it comes to looking for advice, JECBrush has always been there to lend a hand! His style hasn't influenced mine, but I have learned some unique techniques that I have been able to interpret and integrate into my growing art style. Not only that, but also fantastic feedback as well as demonstrations, and very good at explaining things. Aside from art, JEC has mainly been a source of inspiration in building my own worlds and stories.
I will never forget the day I learned that Binxxy streamed on Picarto and also joined her discord. I was so ecstatic to start watching and learning from a real master! I was overjoyed, and she sent me a DM thanking me for taking a genuine interest in her work, which still makes me smile. Certainly deserves her own journal as well, but she has been another massive help in granting advice and watching her processes have given me a whole new perspective and approach to art! I feel like my art has elevated tenfold by what I have learned from just being around her.
Small but sweet mention, I have tried to get in touch with Koul to ask advice before, but no luck. However, I have been able to reach out to TashaLisets, who has a very similar style. Studied them both a little bit and got some insight from talking to Tasha, but on the surface, my main influence from them has been their semi-realistic, semi-cartoon style. When I think of what furry art "should" look like, they are who first come to mind, and what I would somewhat like to replicate as I continue to learn.
Last on my list, but certainly not least, the amazing Elvofirida was one of the first artists I watched on FA, the first I started supporting on Patreon. I haven't necessarily been influenced stylistically, although her .psd files and advice have at least let me try some new things. After I got a start in learning shading from Iskra, as my style has evolved, I think I have begun taking more notes from Elvofirida's methods. In general, she has always been a constant source of inspiration with her ever creative and breathtaking works.
"You can call me whatever you want, but don't ever call me a self-made man. I didn't make it that far on my own. To accept that credit or that medal would discount every single person that has helped me to get here today. That gave me advice, that made an effort, that gave me the time, that lifted me up when I fell, and it gives the wrong impression that we can do it alone. None of us can. The whole concept of the self-made man or woman is a myth." -Arnold Schwarzenegger
