Crimson Bannered Bonefield
Introduction
In a remote corner of Shyish rests a small shrine upon a hill, surrounded by scattered bones and twisted earth. Here, a potent and mysterious creature dwells. It is bound to the site with minor godlike authority. For most of its existence, it remains dormant and the land around it lays scarred but silent. Only when intruders cross its unseen perimeter does the area stir to deadly vigilance. At the center of this spectral defense stands the creatures mightiest vassal. A long passed military legend now compressed into a new body at the cost of his former agency. The bound warlord emits a strong presence as he organizes the dead into a lethal system of terretorial protection. Over time, each fallen trespasser adds to the slow expansion of the shrine’s dominion, feeding the ever-growing Bonefield.
Origins
The Crimson Bannered Bonefield emerged in midst of the Age of Chaos, when worlds collided and Shyish bore the scars of merging realities and dimensions. A small, unremarkable shrine appeared, suffused with a presence that was anything but mortal. Drawn to this nexus of death and distortion, a Nine-Tails spirit claimed dominion over the surrounding land.
To marshal the bones and skeletal remnants scattered across the hills, the spirit bound the wandering soul of a long-dead military legend from another dimension into a massive construct of bone, marrow, and armor. A mask hides the construct’s skeletal visage, framed by a white mane. Stripped of free will, this bound warlord exists solely to command the undead defenders. His tactical genius and martial presence ensure the shrine and its territory remain impervious to intrusion.
In his shadow a undead Scholar was constructed to tend to the shrine and domain.
During idle moments the Scholar experiments with magic and researches new aspects and forms of sorcery.
Key Figures
Nine-Tails Spirit – A minor godbeast of overwhelming spiritual influence, the Nine-Tails rarely interacts physically. Its presence threads subtle sorcery through the land, manipulating the bonefield with ossiarch-inspired sorcery. It operates in a separate phase, imposing its will and intelligence upon the Bonefield without directly engaging in combat.
Bound Warlord – A massive construct of bone and crimson armor, hollow eyes staring from beneath a terrifying mask. Almost immobile on his mound and in close proximity of the shrine. He exists solely to coordinate and project military expertise. His presence alone commands awe and organizes the skeletal forces into a disciplined, reactive army. His experience from a former life makes him a terrifying leader of elite cavalry armies with a great read of the battlefield.
Spearhead Cavalry Commander – Leading the initial charge, this officer wields a large lance and embodies overwhelming offensive momentum. Positioned at the forefront of the mounted ranks, he opens paths through enemy lines for the following forces.
Sword-Wielding Cavalry Commander – Following the spearhead, this officer maintains cohesion and reduces enemy retaliation. His precise control over the cavalry ensures repeated charges remain disciplined and efficient. His versatility and swordmastery allow a fast momentum in all situations and enable his entourage rapid strikes in quick succession whilst upholding a solid defense.
Undead Scholar – Stationed near the warlord’s command mound, the scholar channels supportive and ossiarch-related sorcery. He strengthens strikes, bolsters the cavalry’s efficiency, and weakens intruders, supporting the army from the rear without taking direct combat action.
Doctrine
The Bonefield exists solely to defend its circular perimeter. The army never marches beyond its bounds and reacts only to intrusion. Its scale of response adjusts to the size and threat of trespassers. When the invaders are slain or fled, the skeletal forces retreat and collapse back into scattered bones surrounding the shrine and mound once more. The Warlord returns to its dormant sentinel state and the Nine-Tails’ influence recedes back into subtle threads until the next provocation.
This system embodies reactive perfection: fast, coordinated, lethal and self-sufficient - optimized for territorial defense, attrition, and disruption of any who trespass.
Deployment and Role
The command center is the Warlord’s mound, with the shrine behind it. From this elevated position, the warlord imposes morale and discipline, denies enemy tactics through foresight and bolsters cohesion. Though rarely moving, he can directly engage with a small entourage of his own if threatened.
Infantry Defense – Halberdiers shield the command mound, intercept projectiles with their large shields, and engage intruders who breach the front lines with their heavy halberts, providing a stout defensive core.
Undead Scholar – Supports the army from behind, granting first strike to cavalry, enhancing critical hits, restoring limited vitality and weakens foes to maximize battlefield efficiency.
Elite Cavalry Strike Force – The core offensive power. Fast, repeated charges disrupt enemy formations, deal mortal wounds, and maintain pressure. The spearhead commander leads the initial shock, while the sword-wielding officer maintains cohesion and accelerates strikes, reducing enemy reaction time. This synergy enables attrition, repeated impact, and battlefield dominance, even against superior numbers.
The Bonefield functions as a self-contained defensive machine. Morale, leadership, and sorcery enhance its resilience. Coordinated charges, support from the Scholar, and the bound Warlord’s presence maximize efficiency, ensuring the shrine and surrounding lands remain impervious to all who would dare trespass.
The Bonefield endures. It strikes. None trespass unpunished.
Appendix / Suggested Unit Proxy List
Regiment 1
- Bound Warlord (Katakros proxy)
- Spearhead Cavalry Commander (Zandtos proxy)
- Sword-Wielding Cavalry Commander (Liege proxy, Lode of Saturation, Aura of Sterility)
- 2×10 Kavalos Deathriders (1 champion, 2 banners, 7 riders)
Regiment 2
- Undead Scholar (Soulmason proxy)
- 3 Immortis Guard
All units follow existing Warscrolls and rules from official guides. The Bonefield operates fully within these proxies, ensuring compatibility with standard Age of Sigmar play while preserving the thematic presence and tactical identity of the force.
Let‘s see how many can figure out who the warlord truly is.. or was :p
