Inside the beast! (pictures of my pc)
*if you're not a computer geek or tech or computer talk bores you? Yeah, might not want to read any further. Just posting this as a journal so I don't spam fa with computer pictures (since it's not furry related) and I'm too lazy to.
Uh, this journal will be deleted in about...6-12 hours? just long enough for anyone that's interested to take a glance in regards to my previous journal from this morning about the fan/rattling issue
I'm not posting all the pictures here, just a few so y'all can get an idea of the hell this beast has been giving me for the last year and a half. And yes, I know it's FILTHY and dusty. I felt so bad exposing y'all to such pictures I grabbed a can of air and did some cleaning while I had the case open, blah *avoids the glares of pc enthusiasts and techs*
Anyway, to keep this short:
http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/.....g?t=1364254472 - case fans (only the top one works; the bottom one was broken when I received it)
http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/.....g?t=1364254334 and http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/.....?t=1364254389- closeup of the insides
http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/.....g?t=1364254312 - closeup of the mobo and cpu fan
..don't ask me about any of the parts or hardware inside this thing; I did not build it- I just use it and try my damnest not to break it, lol

Anyway it could still be fan with sticking bearings. If it sounded more like a clicking or rattle like pebbles in a tin can it could still be a hard drive.
I check if all the fans spin easily with it powered off/unplugged or least move easy when on.
And noo! I really hope it's not the hard drive, that's not what I want to hear (no pun intended). If it makes it again, I'll try my darnest to record it on my phone or camera and note it to some of y'all to see if that helps with diagnosing it
One of those things harder to diagnose without being in person
*hug* Hope ya having a good evening otherwise.
the cords/wiring could be more tidy and out of the way. I have like a crap load of zip ties to fix that problem.
But yeah, any help with that would be much appreciated
Second opinion
Now I have some people saying it could be a hard drive issue as well- other than listening for a sound, is there a way to tell if it's a fan or hard drive issue? because as of now, my computer's quiet as a mouse (probably helped cleaning it too, blah)
Yeah, I'm definitely gonna record the sound (if/when) it makes it again; have my camera right next to the computer so I can just grab it and record fast enough. In the meantime, I think I'm gonna upgrade the fans regardless when jade comes to look at them friday; if nothing else, that should make it run a bit quieter
I looked up the Zalman fans and they got some dang good reviews. I can't wait to go shopping friday! *is such a geek* I might just make a field day out of it and get some more ram too if they have the right size for my pc; I'm only running 4gb right. Hoping to keep my pc purring and happy before elder scrolls online comes out later this year
On a sidenote, I noticed you were from la- if you don't mind me asking, what part are you from? (don't have to put specifics since this is the internet, just a general region is fine)
As far as ram, I see that you have an asus board. Dependant on AM2[DDR2] or AM3[DDR3], you should look for G.Skill matched sticks. Your mobo [geek for motherboard] supports dual channel [128-bit] memory interfacing and a matched set would work really well. All you do is notice on the board your SIMM slots are 2 different colors and place the matched set into each channel. [You would need to closely match the timing specs of your old ones to fully utilize this.] Once they are in each channel, CMOS setup allows you to mem config to dual channel from single.
Yeah, me and a friend had this same discussion a few months ago; I really hate my mobo can only take ddr2; that ram is so high compared to ddr3. I'm currently using these sticks http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ.....82E16820220396 (which are no longer made anymore)
So my friend helped me match up the voltage and specs and recommended I either get this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ.....82E16820134641 or this one
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ.....82E16820148160
But I'm hoping best buy has something cheaper than that; makes no sense 2gb should cost that much but I'm not ready to upgrade the mobo (yet)
Closest thing for you at BB would be Mem Sticks
I know one thing: I can never go back to storebought models again. Compared to my old hp I got a few years back? having a custom gaming pc just feels great (when it's not giving me a headache)
I'm gonna have jade look over it friday when she gets off work and I might just go ahead and upgrade the case fans (unless it's the cpu fan) as I wouldn't mind some quieter fans anyway. But yeah, I can't wait till you move back down here! We need to finally meet and have lunch sometime (and it'd be nice to have a local tech within calling range)
Definitely looking forward to hanging out with ya when I get down here. If'n you need more computer help, I'll definitely do my best to provide. ^.^
And sounds good! I might have you give it a once over if/when we meet up. Honestly I haven't had it professionally looked at so it wouldn't hurt. Better than waiting until something's wrong with it, ya know? Anyway, can't wait till you get down here. When you get all settled and situated, we're so going out for either a lunch or dinner- or hell just order a pizza and watch a movie; whatever
Lunch or dinner, hmm... sounds good, too. I still need to figure out all the good places to eat, hehe.
So you have a job in mind once you get back down here or just going to focus on school for a while?
I've gotta do both work and school when I get down there, so my first priority is finding a job. I'm hoping to find something IT-related. Once I get the residency requirement fulfilled I'm going to go to school to become a machinist. A family friend owns a machine shop in Monroe so I'm hoping to help out and learn the ropes so I should be out there often enough. :D
...Some 11K hours later the journal is still here hahahaha
Very naiss machine ~
But yeah, do you see that PSU? I guess I will try to recycle it a bit longer
