Well that was jarring: Sly Cooper Movie

So apparently they've taken this:
If above doesn't work:www.youtube.com/watch?v=RI6vkyyK4Lc
And made it into this for the bigscreen:

Where do I even begin. Don't misunderstand me, I like the way the second one looks in many ways, but something isn't quite right about it. The source material they are using is essentially as basic a cartoon as you can get, with characters that have much of the same design aesthetics as something from Loony Tunes. You render that in fully shaded/furred/detailed CGI with a realistic atmosphere, and that is like doing the same thing to Bugs Bunny. You can't take something that had such a deliberate not-real design and try to make it look real without it looking.... off. Maybe if it was at least more stylized CGI it would have worked, but thats not what I'm seeing.
Sly has always been the simplest kind of cel-shaded. If there was ever a time to make a friggin cartoon, this would have been it, because that movie trailer just looks really, really, really weird.

FA+

Still probably gonna see it tho. :>
People are much more willing to suspend disbelief that a city is full of conveniently hundred-pound tensile strength cables in a video game than they are in a movie, even a cartoon/cgi movie.
This... well... I could dig it in 20 minute chunks. Not a movie.
That being said, I'm definitely on the 2D train for this. The in-game cutscenes were something I always looked forward to seeing, and I think if they had taken that style and just upped the frame rate with the POWER of budget than it would have been a feast for the eyes.
I had no idea Sly was popular enough to make the theaters. This seems interesting, but I'm not going to hold my breath. If it does come out I will see it though.
You almost wish they could go back to Toystory with their simple designs and shapes, looks out dated by todays standards yet still so good.
I wish someone was willing to put in the effort on some good ol' 2d movie-magic.
thanks for sharing these with us!

It's VERY different from the original design though, so I can understand disliking the design based on that.
I like seeing style changes more than most.
I really don't think it's bad.
Of course, if you're hoping for nostalgia in this day and age, they're probably not going to give it to you, but with the personalities and the voices.
It's all artistic perspective. Some people like the style change, some people want the original.
I would like to see a Sly Cooper type movie that's purely 2d animation, but with the way animation has been going it's kind of hard to get that.
So perhaps there's something to be said for attitudes between having played the game lots, and not?
off topic do you have a tumblr?
I get what you're saying though. Let's hope that doesn't happen for the actual movie, and that this is just a trailer and nothing more.
Okay, yeah, I really, really see what you mean now...
Bentley and Murray look off, too, just not the right feel to their faces. I just can't get over Sly's face, though. It's all.. wrong. If they're going to do that to the character, it may as well be some other devious raccoon. Someone with those expressions isn't Sly to me.
Most of the studios are gone, and the only thing people are even remotely trained in is flash. Which has it's own aesthetic problems.
