What's the appeal of Rocket Raccoon?
I'm asking a genuine question here, one that's going to be relevant to me in a few days when some friends drag me kicking and screaming to that movie. I don't know much about him, but I know about him. I've seen him make appearances in cartoons and video games before, briefly. He seems to have a large following to, but from what little I've seen of him he appears to really just be a raccoon with a gun. I'll be the first to admit: I don't get it... I mean, sure, it's cute, but there is clearly something I'm missing here considering the amount of fans this thing has. My interest in the marvel universe never really expanded outside of 90's Xmen. I'm just assuming he's a "lol so inappropriate/random" character, like Deadpool, but please correct me if I'm wrong.
I'd like to feel better about seeing this movie.
I'd like to feel better about seeing this movie.
FA+

I see no appeal either.
It hasn't just been unfaithful to Rocket though. He's fine with bein called a raccoon in the run the movie is based on, because he is literally a raccoon.
It's probably the whole appearance/behaviour issue.
As for the folks here... Raccoon with a gun, tis furry...
Alien ;D
It helps to actually read the comics :V
Also, still makes him an alien.
Aliens made an insane-asylum they called Half-world. Aliens then leave the asylum to robots.
Robots decide they don't want to manage the asylum either, so they uplift all the cute little therapy animals to maintain the asylum.
Rocket is in fact, a raccoon, and is not an alien in any way. The only thing that has contradicted this is the ultimate spider-man cartoon, which is generally awful all-around :V
He had his comic run in the 80's and is a prominent member of the Guardians. He has been in games and cartoons. Some cartoons he doesnt really talk but chitters and acts more or less through body gestures.
I think what makes him popular atm is that its a new and shiny marvel movie and who doesnt like some rude sarcastic characters and that Groots probably going to get popular soon I am surprised you are not asking it instead of why rocket xD he only has one line no matter what he is on. I think rocket wasnt even a raccoon his personality would still be liked by the masses.
Sure, he has the Last Of His Kind thing going on, but don't let the fact that all he SEEMS to say is "I am Groot" fool you into thinking he's a Dumb Monster.
Hank Pym once theorized that what he says may sound that way to us, he's actually saying all kinds of things on a subharmonic level. Although, iirc, he made a translator and asked him his name... you can guess what happened :)
Groot pretty much sacrifed himself for the team. The only reason he lived is because, well, Rocket went and nursed a sapling to health, which turned out to regrow into Groot.
I am a marvel and DC fan and own a multitude of comic although personally I prefer Thor and Deadpool (for the laughs) over Guardians. What I liked of Rocket was not because he is an animal but for that personality because I enjoy the crude sarcastic humor and commentary of him.
I'm thinking it has the appeal of seeing a little old lady suddenly break out into kung fu, its something you dont expect so you kind of want to see it.
I just want to see him screaming about big flarkin' guns and shooting the crap out of doods.
The furry community will always gush on just about ANY Anthro-Animal seen in a game, a book or a movie.
And to my knowlege so far, this is probly the 1st good CGI's Anthro Animal we will see on the big screen right now. (Dawn & Raise of the Planet of the Apes has great CGI, but they arnt...I guess *Furry-Bipedal* animals)
UN-furry related, Bigger Marvel fans can appriciate him and the movie because, well, they are familiar with it and wanna see the movie and how it adapts from a comic into a movie.
I admit, I never read the comic, i ONLY know rocket after playing Marvel VS Capcom 3. I had NO idea where he came from, I jut loved the fact it was a small Raccoon with a Gun and a Large arsenal. And his Attitude and voice was cool too.
When I heard him mention he was a guardian of the galaxy, I thought maybe it was just some spoof.
So after I saw the trailer, its like OH SHIT, I (Vaugly) know him.
I was probly going to see it anyway, but a familiar character makes it just a little more exciting.
Why does he have so many fans? You know the general attitudes on this site better than me. They're gushing over and over sexualizing the hole thing as we speak.
They weren't the only ones though. The Guardians have had other characters join them for periods in the comic, such as Captain Universe, who hadn't been utilized in extremely long periods of time. This is part of the appeal of the new Guardians of the Galaxy team.
The second part of the appeal is the writing. The Guardians know they are a team composed of B-rate cosmic characters, so they approach the whole superhero thing with a flippant, irreverent attitude. The characters all play well off each other as they are put in situations that are way over their heads, sort of like a cosmic Expendables team.
As far as Rocket goes, he's a gruff, vulgar (but intelligent!), wisecracking murder machine in the body of a bipedal raccoon. Some people see appeal in that. I like him myself, but I always thought Star-Lord was a more interesting character.
I recall seeing Rocket back in those days, but like so many others, had generally forgotten about him over the years. Seeing him now, my first thought was "that's not how remember him", until realizing he was re-vamped for a new generation.
Even as a kid back in the 70's, long before ever knowing what a furry was, I loved the occasional anthro character that would show up in Marvel comics, and was always found Rocket to be a cool character. I'm really looking forward to seeing how he's treated in this movie. :)
Its one of those Big things/small package type deals.
Deadpool is actually a great character, who unfortunately had a four year run from 2008-2012 written by Daniel Way where be became a meme-spouting idiot. The internet adores meme-spouting stupid stuff, so that got posted around the web a lot.
Classic (1990's-early 2000's) and modern Deadpool is a freak and a misfit who can never catch a break, finds himself in horrible situations and whose life is pretty miserable, and uses humor as a coping mechanism. Essentially, he's a more extreme version of Spider-Man in every way. His life is more depressing, he kills people, he's kind of a sociopath, and he can be really childish at times when he thinks he's funny, but he's actually a great character. The modern run (2012-present) starts slow but is a great way to get into the character, and his stories are usually both hilarious and bittersweet. If I had to introduce someone to Deadpool I'd just show them this http://imgur.com/gallery/7ikB3
BUT ENOUGH ABOUT THAT! Rocket Raccoon... Hoo boy, where to begin? Most of his modern appeal comes from him being in the 2006 - 2011 "Cosmic Marvel" storyline, starting with Annihilation and ending in Thanos Imperative. In it, Rocket is a gruff but sarcastic tactician who, along with the rest of the team, frequently finds himself in horrifying situations that are completely overwhelming.

The Guardians are essentially a group of people with weak powers at best, and they have no hope of taking on people like Thanos without planning, guts, and ingenuity... and since they are (or were) Marvel's D-list characters any of them could be killed at any time in these horrible stories, and quite a number of them were. They took on borg-like robots that wanted to assimilate all life, they took on lovecraftian cultists and their super-powered cardinals that could essentially play Calvinball with reality, they took on the invading forces of a universe made of pure LIFE - that is, since death didn't exist in that universe it was full of cancerous growths and horrifying flesh-monsters.

To boot, his modern stories were written by Keith Giffen (who is a legend when it comes to outer space comic book adventures, and created Rocket way back when) and Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning (famous for great comic books and Warhammer 40k novels!)... and who doesn't love a fucking talking raccoon that can talk down THANOS of all people?

Rocket joins the party in Annihilation:Conquest, but Star-Lord's group doesn't become the Guardians of the Galaxy until Guardians of the Galaxy #1. Rocket sticks around until the very end, and he's even in the last panel of Thanos Imperative if I remember right.
Yeah, sadly thats the only Deadpool I know about. Like I said I don't know much about the marvel universe outside of old Xmen stuff ._.
Then you can just go here: http://comraderecs.tumblr.com/ and you can find a recommended masterlist for whatever character or company you want to read about.
Cosmic Marvel is a pretty great place to start, honestly.
What characters and plots are you looking for?
Also in DC: I'd like to start collecting the Green Lantern arc that began with the Yellow battery being forged on Ysmault (Sinestro Corps War) and ended with the defeat of that cosmic death guy and the Black Lanterns (Brightest Day). I just can't figure out in what graphic novel does the whole thing begin.
And then there's the Reign of Supermen following the Death of Superman.
As for Marvel...
I'd like to find collections following the Juggernaut's tenure as an X-man. I know he joined the team after they rescued him from assault by these mystical hunters and then had to leave after Cytorrak threatened him for not being chaotic enough after losing against the Hulk during WWH.
There were others i wanted to follow but can't remember them off the top of my head...I'll probably ask you if I recall them.
The DC plotline with the aztec, no clue. I'm more of a marvel guy, as I've sworn off DC due to a lot of their recent shenanigans... and I just generally prefer Marvel's stories and characters.
The green lantern arc, I'm not terribly familiar but that seems to be the entire Geoff John run, right? So I think that's all of volume 4. The guide/reading list is here http://i.imgur.com/4aIBzlw.png and there's no doubt a way to find trade paperbacks of all that.
The 4chan /co/ guide lists the whole arc I think at the bottom here http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m.....k63o1_1280.png so it shouldn't be too hard to find the trade paperbacks.
Reign of the supermen is probably collected as it's own volume or part of a bigger death and return of superman volume.
The Juggernaut storyline is a little tricky. World War Hulk is pretty recent, but there's like twenty X-men books right now. Looking it up a bit, that miiiiiight be in X-men: Legacy? 2009ish?
All I know about the Juggernaut's joining the X-men is that he was being hunted by some wolf-like mystical hunter creatures who were formerly enemies of Wolverine's. He was being overwhelmed because his powers were mystical in nature, so Xavier sent a team to help him out. After recovering he stuck around at the X-mansion teaching gym class until his old partner Black Tom killed his favorite student, and Cytorakk started threatening him for not being chaotic enough. This was back when the mansion was crawling with students (before that evil church wiped out all the new tertiary characters) and before Colossus came into possession of the crimson bands.
Legacy sounds like it might be right...it was the same serial Cassandra Nova was introduced in, but I think by the time that had happened Marko had moved on.
"Zany, silly 'this is fun' core concept turned 'hardcore badass' by an evolving overall comics aesthetic."
He's randumb wacky with cyborg-like bolted on artificial depth♪
Okay, a non-modern-batman comic book?
I've an entire collection of silver age Iron Man (As in an original run not Silver Sentinel), some Namor sets, etc. Mostly Marvel but I've a few DC and smaller studio runs too. I even have the silly "Medieval Spawn/Witchblade!!!" book.
I just think the whole schtick can be laid out in a really simple, concise way for those who don't instead of trying to 'convert' folks into reading or prattling on and on about character history♥
Rocket's really well written in the 2006/2008 run, and at no point is he random or wacky. No more than regular or I guess Claremont's wolverine though.
They've tried to make him a bit wacky in the 2012 run by Bendis, but that's bendis being bendis. He won't be wacky in the movie.
I haven't gone through original run Iron Man yet, I'm reading through the Lee/Kirby Fantastic Four atm. Re-read annihilation the other day and was surprised to recognize the mad thinker's robot!
Well, kinda. Giffen was the lead artist of his earliest appearances and made his original design, and then came back and wrote him in Annihilation through Thanos Imperative.
If there were more characters like him, it would quickly become cliche. Right now, it's the anti-cliche. If the film is successful, I've no doubt copycat characters will be spawned.
Better watch it fast! Fox is having it taken down everywhere!
It's honestly a pity this version isn't getting made, but there's rumors that Deadpool might be showing up in an upcoming X-Force movie set in the Days of Future Past/First Class continuity. Who knows, Ryan Reynolds might reprise the role, but given his bad luck with comic book films some higher ups might veto him.
Cannot contain my excitement!!
Man, that was fun. I should've tried that sushi...
There's probably like 4 different origin story's for Rocket.
So id suggest just going with the version that the movie is based off of.
Also there was an old Deadpool comic that I read in which he runs over {accidentally} a family of raccons an the only one that survives, picked up a dropped gun an goes on a vengeful rampage. Tho that might be something different... idk it was years ago since I read it..
The only alternate versions are the ones in Ultimate Marvel, which is an alternate universe line of comics that's been running since the 90's, and even there most of the origins are fairly similar.
The Deadpool thing is completely unrelated.
Also, Rotten Tomatoes seems to like it a lot, and that's usually enough for me to at least buy a ticket.
Lol I might go tonight or tomorrow actually. I didn't realize it was out! <XD
One thing I'll give Marvel film studios credit for is that they seem to be learning from their mistakes. They're no longer just floundering about like they were in the days of the early X-Men films, and they are at the point now where storytelling is taking precedence over the heroes themselves.
I honestly had never heard of him before the promos for this movie, so he's not exactly on my list of Marvel favorites, but I would watch this movie for that alone.
I imagine the mainstream appeal is largely a novelty thing. Deadpool's status is because he's funny as hell, but again, raccoon with a gun. If that phrase alone doesn't make you want to know more, I don't know what to tell you.
