Can Guilleromo Del Toro and Hideo Kojima actually do horror?
It's being made by Hideo Kojima and Guillermo Del Toro
Guilleromo Del Toro's team usually makes magnificent creatures, so that's a plus for this new Silent hill game since I'm assuming that will effect the monster design in-game, but I really, REALLY hope he isn't directing or writing it. I'm just going to say it now, I don't think this guy is capable of horror, at least the kind you find in Silent hill. The closest thing I've seen this guy get to horror was 'Mimic', and that was quite a long time ago. If anything his movies are consistently getting sillier and sillier. Now don't get me wrong, Hellboy 1 was one of my favorite movies, and I even liked the second one a lot... but the second one mostly for eyecandy, and this brings me to what I am apprehensive about. When I think of Del Toro now, I think of cool monsters still, BUT I also think of that scientist from Hellboy 2... you know which one. I also think of that scientist from Pacific Rim as well... you know which one. Thinking about those characters makes me wince and actually curl up like a spider just sprayed with RAID. I am really unsure what to think hearing this guy will play a role in a new Silent Hill.
Then there is Hideo Kojima who is completely fucking insane, but that's GOOD! Granted, he still might not be up to the task of horror, but we're on the right track at least. I am under the belief you cannot make a good Silent Hill game unless one person on the production team is mentally unstable. Still, the guy is known for also getting super silly and banking on jokes in otherwise serious situations. That is absolutely not something Silent Hill would benefit from, but I guess we'll see. I am more confident in his abilities to do the writing and directing then I am Del Toro, but they might work well off eachother somehow, I don't know yet, we'll see.
There is also Daryl Dixon, aka the hillbilly from the walking dead. I never like it when celebrities are brought into video games, I find it pointless and extremely jarring. It's also usually a red flag: an admittance they think they need starpower because someone up the ladder fears the game can't or won't stand on it's own.
But hey, whatever comes of this it can't be worse then all the recent American made Silent Hills... right? ;_:

FA+

that line made me think you were talking about the movies...I loved silent hilll but then the room and homecoming ruined it for me
Short answer? Probably not.
Hideo Kojima tells very trippy stories, but he shoves his cards in people's faces so much, any surprise horror builds off of would be lost quickly.
I honestly don't know how to feel about this though. MAYBE it'll be acceptable? The weirdest part is ACTUALLY putting a REAL person in the game series which just...really knocks the vibe of the game to me altogether. It's just weeeeird.
I really don't know. And I don't have a PS4 nor do I plan on getting one so chances are...I'll try not to care.
I'll just sit here clutching my Team Silent-made Silent Hill games and shaking my fist. >.>;;;
But hey at least this piqued my interest which is more than I can say for most entertainment media short of what indies are doing! (Or maybe I just got old and cynical)
This.
Honestly, what I want out of a new horror is good flavor text. Seriously. I miss being able to click on random things and have the character respond to them, whether in voice or text(just use text guys, it's ok. Gamers can still read, you know), and just have that be true of anything that looks strange, and maybe some things that don't.
"There are just books here, nothing more."
"It seems to be some sort of altar"
And just being able to read signs and posters and fallen scraps and have the character react. Even if they are not necessarily important to the story
Things like that breathed life into the older Silent Hill games for me. That is what I live for, and the way that these games lately have felt like a movie you walk through really ruins the experience for me. It doesn't explore the full potential of video gaming, of interactive media that is meant to be played over numerous days rather than a single sitting, if it's just you running through a lovingly rendered environment with scary monsters without that added bit of depth to the world.
I never even played SH Downpour but I heard it was pretty bad. Homecoming was doomed to fail right from the start because you were actually playing a character who was supposed to be a "capable combatant" (an ex-soldier). So it felt like you were supposed to fight/dance with the enemies in Homecoming more than avoid them (which is pretty much the polar opposite of how things were in every other SH =P).
Meh, I don't know if the series is salvageable at this point. Same goes with Resident Evil (BTW, did you hear Wesker is supposed to still be "alive" somehow in RE7? Ell oh ell. -_-), which has basically turned into Gears of War with zombies. -_- But, well, I suppose I give these two guys a better shot of making a "fun" Silent Hill game than a lot of other people they could have picked.
