If its your fetish, so be it.
But since you're asking me: Yeah sure, furries can be a fetish.
I think a better question would be what can't be a fetish?
Chainsaws? Grind my gears!
Sticks? I prefer them veiny.
Guns? Most of the U S f***ing A has a hard-on for guns!
No seriously, give me something that can't be fetishized. I dare you! XD
"Furry" porn, is just an evolved manifestation of cartoon smut that has existed since shortly after the dawn of the nickelodeon (the machine, not the channel). Murr-suiting is simply a form of bed-time role play, no different than someone dressing up as a super hero or movie star for sexual purposes. And, all the other so-called things that "furries" are into, are actually their own grouping. Diapers, BDSM, costuming, even a fur pile (viewed from the most derogatory/perverse version of the meaning) is simply an orgy... all of these and more have existed well before the fur fandom.
Because we individually possess such a diverse range of interests and share only a single primary interest in common, that makes us a subculture--no different than the goth scene, punk rockers, bikers, weeaboo (anime geeks), and so on. The real reason why we give off the impression that we are simply fetishists is because a great deal of being a furry is focused around the artwork that helps us represent who we feel we are inside, and doing so on the internet leads to an open and generally safe place to explore all our other fantasies as well.
Thus, we end up drawing not only our fursona, our avatar, our icon, writing our back story (in the case of RPers), but we also get around to boinking Minerva Mink, Chip and Dale, Sonic, and whomever else we thought was sexually attractive. Porn is a powerful and easily exploited industry, so naturally if there is a new cartoon out, we have to draw porn of it. Why? Because someone surely would appreciate it, and that someone has money to pay to make it happen. Why else? "Because I can draw it, and I'm the one who thinks its hot".
Animal characters have been at the center of cartoons since Disney and WB and even before them. "Furry" porn, is merely fantasy drawings and fan art centered around fictional events that are not likely to ever happen. Just as cartoons and anime represent the same concept. Our art work is quite often original in and of itself, but the concept is hardly new. We're just people, and lets face it... people love porn... and, people are often driven by their loins. Our true bond as furries is the fact that we desire to be something that we cannot be. We fantasize about worlds and events that could likely never happen, and are centered around that shared common interest... the anthropomorphized versions of our dream selves and the cartoons (or other furries) that helped inspire us.
Are there people that are introduced to or become a part of the fur fandom through witnessing some of the "furry" art style? Yes. More and more people begin to think that being a "furry" is just a kink, and join because to them its no different than joining fetlife or some other kink-blog/porn site, or becoming friends (likely to hope "with benefits") with someone (or more) that have what they believe to be a "taboo" or "unique" kink. With the internet being the way it is, and people underscoring the wrong key points about certain subcultures or web sites, eventually you will be right. People will have likely forgotten what it means to dream, and "furries" will simply be people that draw a specific kind of pornography, placed on a shelf somewhere next to the Hentai section in one of those shady little shops that sell such things. Fursuiters will become the out cast extremists. Mascots will be banned from sports games. And, people will start to question whether or not it is ideal for their children to be "exposed to such filthy cartoon characters". All because of the belief that being a "furry" is a kink.
Or... people will realize that being a furry is not a kink, and we'll stop being the bad guys that supposedly ruin everything.
