this site and it's people
Let's be honest right now, everyone here in their right mind knows that this site it garbage to some degree or another. Artists are trying to leave left and right only to be responded to with "LOL OK SEE YOU IN A WEEK " or "kthxbye"
it irks me so hard that commissioners and fans would be so cold to the fact that when a web site people rely on to make a living off of goes down every other month for an extended point in time and leaks account information it REALLY HURTS THE ARTIST
i'm very lucky, this week i was well off and had everything squared away and had people that i could contact on skype and twitter to offer commissions to
but not everyone was so lucky
so when an artist say that they are leaving because tHIS SITE IS ACTUALLY GOD AWFUL
please do not laugh at them, and consider making the transition with them, no one will make you stop using FA but it sucks that artists are backed into a corner where the only available market is on a site that crashes and burns all the time :(
here mods play favorites and pick on people, the site crashes all the time, passwords get leaked, owners scam and a whole lot of other issues
this is not a gift from god
it is just a old site that accumulated a ton of traffic
please consider following artists else where and supporting them there
on that note i will mainly be on twitter
https://twitter.com/CodeineJetpack
and i will be trying out furry network
https://beta.furrynetwork.com/codeine/

good luck amassing a following elsewhere, all we really need is to break the habit of associating this place w the center of all furry activity
Not to mention the only reason this site is the most attacked is because it is the most popular. I guarantee if some other site like weasyl was as popular the same kind of attacks would happen there, and then people would leave that site for some other site.
I wish you the very best, dear.
-People always want to leave, but its for reasons that can, will, and have happened everywhere else (Sometimes in secret)
-The Customer and Supporters are as hurt as the Artist, they can't communicate and worry bout their money and product as much as the artist worries about getting paid and getting business
-More people need to ask for and share alternative contacts for when something like a downtime happens, for some reason not everybody with a business here does that yet
-By asking the watcher and consumer to come with you, you are asking them to abandon their preferred place (if they like it here) just because you dont like it here and follow you elsewhere. - Over time many different places have opened up, and everyone is flocking all over the place, this creates the issue that we have to create multiple accounts across multiple places to follow everyone we like. This creates a new issue That i shouldn't have to explain....and that why people don't do it.
And that leads to artists coming back and Dealing With It.
And...honestly, as garbage as this site is...its the most familiar, Simple and user friendly out of everything. Inkbunny coming at a close 2nd...although there is a certant fetish most people dont care for over there....
I knew about FN before its beta, and I can't be a big part of that place until some updates, Im not a fan of its layouts.
Time and time again I've seen people say they're moving elsewhere, and unsurprisingly they return. As old as FA is we need to appreciate the fact it's allowed so many the popularity they have, and over such a long period of time.
FA would have to go down, hard, for more than a year for people to actually finally leave this site.
There are two sides to every story.
Well FA gets attacked and boycotted, and we simply don't have a very strong Adminteam.
Artists have to keep contact ways open and best is still via mail, sites are often just sub-optimal.
If Dragoneer would have used the money he got from the fundraiser and from selling out to IMVU there wouldnt be an 8th of the issues.
The "staff" needs to research the software/coding they are going to use before just throwing it on hoping for the best because they would rather do other things then WORK on what they "claim to love".
Also since IMVU bought FA I have only noticed 2 new staff members really doing anything. Doesnt seem like much of an improvement if you ask me.
MS and Sony are often the butt of random attacks as well, and people still fall into the same logical issues blaming MS and Sony for things they literally cannot control nor prevent (DDOS attacks can only be mitigated, not prevented, and for a service like theirs most mitigation tactics are unusable).
You cannot realistically blame FA for being attacked unless they knew about whatever vulnerability was exploited before hand. Thats not how the internet works.
DA would get attention of more hate groups then FA ever will but yet they are able to manage securing their site WAY better then FA ever has. So its do able, just need a staff that isnt lazy pretending to work when nothings really getting done, Really now... How long has this "Beta FA" been worked on? 6 to 10 months now? Doesnt take that long to remake a web site.
In short; shit happens. You cannot blame the site for an attack unless they knew about the security issue before hand and did nothing about it, which so far, no one has bothered to prove in this situation. Its also ass backwards to blame the victim for the actions of a criminal.
They could have taken measures to prevent it from happening but they just let things go as hoping nothing happens.
Which brings me back to the staff needs to research on the software they are about to plug into the site. Any business/professional staff would have gone and changed server login info, system data base passwords and so on to help stop it. Even with the source code you cant really do much without the right information to get into the machine or program hosting it.
So, they knew that their information was at risk for a month before the attack happened, meaning that "Hey FA is a target on a day to day bases, maybe we should take a few steps to cover our ass just in case someone that hates us noticed that issue." But clearly as you can see from the last week nothing was done and those that got a copy of the files handed it out and someone had a field day due to lazy or even carelessness among the FA staff.
The staff really needs to get their act together. "Being the biggest site" will only keep them afloat for so long.
"code via the recent “ImageTragick” exploit in the ImageMagick library (a common server-side image processing software). This exploit was patched earlier in this month"
They did patch it. They took the same steps every single other site on the face of the planet does. Exploit find, exploit patch. If theres evidence someone abused the exploit, address it then. Which is what can be seen later " but not before a malicious user was able to download a copy of our source code, and later actively distributed it via USB drives at a convention.
We managed to get a hold of one of the USB drives and started to analyze what was distributed. While we were investigating, somebody launched a second attack against the site using information gleaned from the source code."
They did something about it. Your complaints are simply unfounded, misdirected, and just show an overall lack of understanding on how these attacks even happen, and what goes into preventing them.
IF anything is making people leave then it is this lack of respect and tolerance that is the cause more then anything else.
Sing it!
also I'm setting up my FA so it diverts people to my other pages in a small degree,
Site has a paddy again, got my back-ups~
And people are not being cold, they are just tired of hearing all these journals all the time from the same people.
Nor are all the people that say that commissioners, some of them are other artists. Artists are not the definitive victim in that and sometimes commissioners are the ones that leave and get bullied into staying by obtuse posting rules.
Other sites are smaller, harder to use, and have communities that are rather vile in some cases. FA isn't going to be exploding anytime soon, though I expect as the largest furry community on the net they will suffer some more attacks in their lifetime because that is just sadly how it goes.
Is it perfect? Hell no, but it's functional and it does most of the job it needs to, even though that's beyond it's original purpose.
Other sites do exist, and I'm not gonna dis or harp on people using them; their lives their choices. My choice is that I'm here and I just don't have enough hours in the day to add surfing to other websites, so here I stay until this one blows up completely.
i'm not saying a guy should move to 6 different sites for just one artist. but if you know that a handful of artists you love have moved to another site either full time or as an alternate gallery, why is it so bad to go watch them and talk to them there too?
but i probably just answered my own question... pure laziness.
And as appeasing that is to artists (finally a site that understands me!) the root of the problem is... just artists don't make an audience to sell stuff.
As long as the new sites only clamor to artists, but leave the watcher, the viewer, the people who *buy* the art rather than make it in the cold, they will all fail. And yet, that seems a pretty hard concept to grasp since new attempts always fail there, just luring artiss with promises only to find them lacking a costumer base since, well, they didn't think of *that*.
And thus the artist returns to FA, and thus the "they'll return" keeps happening. And thus such leaving threats are hollow.
I agree that FA is an ass, but there are a ton of other websites that have it MUCH WORSE than here. The FA staff is also questionable, but what place on the internet actually has an honest staff. And speaking of safety, it's the internet and you're never safe. Sooner or later the good websites like Weasyl and FurryNetwork will be experiencing their own troubles and controversies.
It doesn't matter what website you transfer to, how many places you store your stuff and the security they promise. There will always be 'those people' eying yours and others actions, and they're always learning how to get around.
