Yes, that is generally correct... But, the question that seems to be missed in this is "but are you good enough as an artist to land an entry-level position?"
... There are a lot of artists that, as much as I hate to sound like a salty bitch, simply cannot justify that kind of pricing (and if their level of skill does, their work-ethic pulls it right back down.)

There are some artists who value their art way too highly.
I blame the tendency I've noticed of furries never allowing anyone to say anything negative.
Professional artists don't tend to make a lot of money per hour - illustration work is sometimes hard to find and entry-level illustration may only net you $20/hr (in my line of work this is about entry level even for modelers).
Assuming a reasonable pay rate of $25/hr (about what I made as an engineering intern in my field), you're looking at valuing a 5k commission at 200 hours of work, or five work weeks. That's a LOT of time to put into a single piece.
