Sometimes it pays to do your job...

Thought I would share a more "slice of life" type journal since I really do not share much about my life on here with anyone, outside of my close friends. That and I really need to be more active on here outside of just posting art! But most of you with jobs or that are in school know that is easier said than done sometimes. But I digress-
So today started off interesting...
It was barely 0800 and people were already in my office at work bothering and talking to me. Just an fyi, I am NOT a chatty person first thing in the morning. So having people holding long conversations with me before 1000 and expecting me to be social? Yeah, it is not happening; you will probably get ellipsized or a look of indifference until I am fully awake, lol.
Anyway, my boss, another coworker, and a couple of students were standing outside my door, when the president of the hospital comes up to me, hands me a small envelope, and walks out of the department without saying a word.
Me to myself: Huh. That cannot be good.
Of course my boss's interest was piqued as he asked me to open it and see what it is. I was hoping it was not bad news, but he assured me if it was bad, HR (Human Resources) would have brought it by, not the president of the facility.
So I open it and what do I see?
It's a thank you card.
Not only did he use his personal stationary for it, but he wrote it himself! I could tell as when his secretary writes his letters, she uses a stamp with his name on it, or if she signs his name, puts her initials behind it.
I have to admit knowing an important guy like himself took a few minutes to thank me for my job did put a smile on my face.
But the kicker is, I was not expecting it, much less any gratitude for my work.
I made a flyer for a community event our facility is hosting. Actually I was voluntold to make it...the president's secretary was "too busy" to make it (Read: she's lazy and didn't feel like putting the effort or creativity in doing extra work) so it was passed off to me to do. Fine, no big deal; just another task for me to do.
It only took me a few hours to make it. If anything, the annoying part was getting it approved and having to do revisions on it until they were happy with it. After I finished the flyer, I did not think anything more about it.
But apparently he found out I made it, along with the fact he knows me and what I do, so he wrote me a thank you card!
So the moral of this little story, is that yes, it DOES pay to work hard and do your job sometimes! Work sucks sometimes...okay, alot, but it is nice when people recognize and appreciate what you do for them. I even called my mom from work and told her, she was proud of me!
...that feeling when you realize you are 33 and still call your mom when something good happens to you.
Now if they would just give me a little raise that would be perfect! Yeah, I better not push my luck, haha.
Other than that, things are okay on my end! Still busy with work, fitness, and trying to keep a low profile. Yes, I am alive, and yes, I am doing well. If I am quiet, that usually means I am okay and I am staying out of trouble~
I have LOTS of exciting commissions planned for the spring, but first Whisper needs to go on a mini hiatus to let her fur change colors for the season. I will be posting a few more winter pieces of her before the month is up so keep an eye out. I know most of my watchers like Whisper's brown, spotted version more than her winter coat: get ready, it is returning soon...
I hope everyone is having a great week and doing okay. Take care~

heh, sometimes, small enjoyable things happen ! it always feels good :)
Thanks for that little personal story and I am glad you got the appreciation!
Honestly, I just got disgusted with how out of shape and fat I was, so I decided to do something about it and changed it! It did not happen overnight though; trust me, I used to abhor exercise! And trying to balance exercise AND work? Hard, but I realized if I exercise before I go to work, it is better than drinking coffee! It gives you a little boost to get you started for the day and makes you feel good about yourself!
You can do it! You just need to motivate yourself and remind yourself why you want to exercise. And thank you for the kind words~
If you ever need any help, please let me know! I am far from an expert but I will help or lead you in the right direction if I can~
Just tell me what your goal(s) are, typical meals or foods you eat, exercises you do, and hopefully I can guide you. Or if I do not know the answer, I can discretely ask my dietitian for you~
But you are right; the bigger the company, the harder it is to receive recognition for your work. I work with nearly 800 people, and especially in a hospital, getting recognized for your work is, well...uncommon. So that makes me all the better! Even moreso someone at the top of the corporate ladder took note of it.
"Just try not to make others look too bad like I do.." Oh don't worry; I keep a VERY low profile at my job. I keep to myself, do my job, and go home, lol. I already have some women at my job jealous of me because I lost so much weight! You should hear some of the humors they've said about me on how I lost weight: starving myself, walking nonstop (lol). Ironically, it's the overweight women making said rumors, yet when I offer to help them lose weight? They suddenly shut up, lol
It's sad being successful or happy brings out the nasty side of other people. Why can't others be happy for you?! At least your boss and another person does defend you, thank goodness.
Thank you sir.Indeed...Hey, at least your manager and supervisors appreciate you and KNOW you do your job! But the problem is, because you do your job so well, they take advantage of that and it wears down the good workers; that's how companies lose good workers: they use and abuse them until they're worn out without giving them the appreciation and compensation they deserve. So the workers either stop caring, find new jobs, or do the bare minimum so they won't get worked to death.
I would not recommend asking for a raise yet since you're still fairly new there- that might not end well, haha. Does your job give out evaluations or yearly raises? Like at my job, we have the chance to get raises yearly based on our yearly evaluations. The better the review, the better the raise is.
Yeah, if you start working out again, let me know! I can wake you up at 5 when I'm up so we can exercise together! LOL.
And that is great you plan on doing some reading to enhance your education: there is nothing wrong with that at all. Maybe even attend a trade school on night or your off days to pick up a skill (cars, plumbing, repair work). You never know when that could come in handy!
LOL! I was wondering how you, the dogs, and cats were doing, Hopefully things will settle after a while.
Hard work really worth it!
Yes, hard work does pay off sometimes, even when it does not seem like others notice the work you do.
I hope are you doing well over there and not working too hard~
Long story short, I work in a lab and I made a bit of a mess at my workstation that I couldn't take care of, having no access of the equipment required to fix it, so I asked our support team who directed me to the ladies who does or cleaning, contractors basically. I haven't had an awful lot of interaction with them before but I'd smile and ask how they were doing and we'd have a little chat once in a while, you know, try to treat them well. So I explain to them that I made a mess and they cleaned it up for me and I wanted to do more than just say thanks over and over (cuz I'd already done that) so I bought them a variety of pastries and other things and gave it to them the day after, explaining that I really appreciated them helping me. What I got in return was basically a bewildered look of "But you didn't have to...it's our job, we'd have done it for nothing!" and when I explained it didn't matter and I just wanted to let them know they were appreciated it was like the sun peeked out from a cloud. They were so happy for days and days afterwards and even now they still have a different cadence when they greet me compared to most others at the lab.
tl;dr of the tl;dr, I think I uncovered for a moment just how underappreciated these general maintenance workers feels, especially when they know and interact with us "real" employees who works in the workplace and that what I did truly was something special to them, which is really heartwarming and saddening at the same time.
As for you I'm happy for you! :) You gotta take what you can get with managers in my experience so I'm glad to hear of it happening to ya ^_^
Let me just say that was really awesome of you to do that for those contractors! People like that are always doing tons of work, even at my job, but because what they do is "expected" of them, they really do not get the thank you they deserve.
That is why at my job, when I see any of our housekeeping staff, I always speak to them when I see them in the halls at work, greet them, and thank them when they take out my trash or clean my office.
My job tends to be thankless as well; you just do what you're expected and do not expect a thank you or job well done: you just do it beause it is your job and you want to get paid!
But when someone comes along and appreciates you, it is like a morale booster that makes you feel good! I wish more management would realize that, because it would actually boost their employees to where they might actually do their jobs better!
Small gestures things can make a large impact and workers morale is one of those things I think managers just overlooks either because, sadly, of their ego. Just because you "lead" doesn't mean you don't rely on them, which is why it's so dangerous (not to mention, really mean and blinding) with that hierarchical line of thinking. Perhaps we should stop calling them directors and managers and re-brand their job-titles to "guides" to let them know their role in workplace-operation really isn't (or shouldn't be) to sit above it like a rider on a mount, but to be within it as the brain inside the body?
That went very philosophical haha.
