Magnetic Case Progress Report
Hiya everyone, I just got done working on my attempt to make a do it yourself magnetic case and want to share a little how it has gone.
Now I did use these magnetic sheets with adheasive backing to line a wheeled toolbox I had kicking around. The initial test was empty bases and a HQ model and it worked fine with my idea being to have the infantry on the sides and to have the heavier stuff on the bottom. That being said I did kind of jump the shark and got a little too hyped for this project and idea.
You see the heavier models I can tell the magnets are working as when I placed them down or remove them the magnets pull can be felt, but the models and their weight were just way too much, especially since the Wraithknight to be blunt is a brick in terms of weight.
The bright side is that infantry which don't weigh that much are the best for this, but the problem is that I do have some big miniatures for the Eldar force and another down side is I was hoping this would be a solution for every miniature I have especially the bigger ones like the big furry models I have done and especially my Gamma Wolves. The weight was something I overlooked when looking into this, to help give an idea of how much some of these weigh, my Wraithknight easily weighs atleast a pound maybe two(I don't have a weight scale, just going by how it feels to me ^^; ) and to use the big model I used for Magna it weighs almost the same with some of the gunpla I used for the Gamma Wolves having some weight with Sazabi being the best example.
Ultimately when it came to me tackling this further I had a few options.
1. I can try to expirement with more powerful magnets that can handle the weight.
2. Find some steel, use some Gorilla mounting tape to cover the magnetic sheets with said steel.
3. I can go the safe route and just go with foam.
I was considering going back to foam but I was in it deep and I decided not to give up. That was last month where I thought more in depth and went with the metal plates and mounting tape. I went with 8"x8" 430 metal sheets and 3"x3" mounting brackets after researching a little on what stainless steel was magnetic. This was to deal with the heavier models and I also nabbed these 20mm x 3mm super magnets to help with those aswell.
Then we come to this month and for some reason it took Amazon basically all month to send to me what I needed to finish this project but early last week the stuff finally came in. I only used half of the metal brackets and sheets and a little over half the mounting tape I think, so down the line I can either add more to the case or a future one for my Gamma Wolves. Thankfully I can say the case works amazingly well and while there is some trail and error with the greenstuff and magnets to the miniature bases to mounting the sheets into the case a little, but I am pleased to announce it now works as intended.
Speaking of miniatures I have a few more for the Eldar, four to be exact that I have planned and then I'll probably take a short break from models in general.
